Jockey Quotes - Group 1 Winx Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

James McDonald (Verry Elleegant): “Without doubt she is an absolute star. She has been working. She has progressed so much the last six months it is incredible. She would have to be the toughest mare I have had anything to do with. They do a tremendous job with them it is well documented. Her work has been fantastic.

“Her trial was superb so for Chris to put her into this race off one trial, he gave her two last time and it took the brilliance out of her. She has come back in great order.”

“It didn’t all work out well. It was such a compact sort of race the whole time from the moment we left the stalls she was back but I always had some cover for the majority of the race but it dropped at the 550m and instead of easing her to stop her momentum, she was going so nice. Her forte is her long sustained sprint and that wasn’t stopping today. She was getting stronger as the race went on.”

“(Star Of The Seas) went past me no doubt about it. But he didn’t put enough on me without me asking her for the full effort. And when I did give her a reminder she just said here I am. Let’s go.”

Sam Clipperton (Star Of The Seas): “Outstanding effort. Couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Jason Collett (Fierce Impact): “Good run. Settled nicely, got into a good rhythm and really quickened well. Finished off nicely.”

Jay Ford (The Bostonian): “I was travelling really well off a strong tempo and once he pushed into the clear I thought he’d challenge quickly but he grinded it out.”

Kathy O'Hara (Imaging): “He went super. I just wish he’d drawn a barrier and he would have won. But nonetheless he went super.”

Glen Boss (Kolding): “He is just not going as well as he should. I know it is first up and he never runs well first up but I’d like to see him do a bit more.”

Tommy Berry (Master Of Wine): “Just grinded home.”

Regan Bayliss (Niccanova): “Settled a touch worse than midfield and travelled into the race well but hit a flat spot but motored late. On target for a race like the Epsom down in the weights.”

Josh Parr (Quackerjack): “We got softened early on a hot tempo and it told late.”

Rachel King (Brandenburg): “Really good run. Had to do some work early. Should put him spot on for next time.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Melody Belle): “Was just getting warmed up when blocked in the straight which didn’t help.”

Tim Clark (Con Te Partiro): “She ran terrific. She has come back in good order.”

Glyn Schofield (Flit): “Enjoyed a beautiful run. Lacked a turn of speed when I needed.”

Adam Hyeronimus (Wolfe): “He needs a drop back in grade and up in distance.”

Koby Jennings (Zebrowski): “He will be flying this prep. I got further back than hoped and they backed off in front of us.”

Brenton Avdulla (Dreamforce): “No they went too quick for him.”
