Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the $1,000,000 Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) at Royal Randwick.
Brenton Advulla (Ellsberg): “I let it unfold for the first 50m. I was happy to get control. He obviously raced so well the other day (dead-heating in the Epsom) ridden with a sit, it was a PB. But once I was able to get control from after a furlong, the race was his to lose in a way. Got control, let him get around the bend, skipped up down the dip and the race was all over.”
“I wasn’t here last year but to ride a couple of winners today, big day.”
“I’ve only ridden him twice too. It’s just nice I didn’t have to share the one today. Prepped in really good order. Gerald (Ryan) gave me a great push that he hasn’t gone backwards and even Jason who rides him work, he said his work on Tuesday was unreal. I was able to ride him confidently, he got control and it was over a long way out.”
Ellsberg wins the Five Diamonds Prelude
Chad Schofield (Sibaaq): “Travelled well in the box seat. Ellsberg dropped us in the straight but kept to his task really well. Will be hard to beat in the Five Diamonds.”
William Pike (Rebel Rama): “She went really well. Did it tough and never gave up. Always willing.”
Damian Lane (Ayrton): “Really good run. Track is getting quite chopped up around the corner and that is not to his liking. He doesn’t travel well through it. He hit the line well.”
Sam Clipperton (Our Playboy): “He’s gone really well. I just had to go too far from the wide draw. But his last furlong was super.”
Hugh Bowman (Rustic Steel): “I was really happy with him. I thought he peaked on his run at the 100m so will improve on that.”
Craig Williams (Aleas): “He was slow out but because he drew so well he was able to overcome that slow start. He got three back the running rail. They didn’t go fast and outsprinted him. He stuck to his task nicely. They were too sharp for him.”
James Orman (The Frontman): “Got a lovely run midfield one off. They are a little bit sharp for him. Can’t wait until he steps up over further.”
Tom Sherry (Toomuchtobear): “A bit awkward early. He’ll improve off the back of that up in trip.”
James McDonald (Diamil): “Not far off the mark. He’s building to something but needs those runs of fitness and I reckon he will be spot on. I think he is going well.”
Glyn Schofield (Alcyone): “He landed in a great spot. Just didn’t have a sprint when I needed it.”
Nash Rawiller (Kinloch): “Ran really good. Feels like he is still on the way up this preparation. He’ll fit into one of the good races later.”
Jay Ford (Atishu): “A little bit playful in the gates which cost us a clean getaway. Was really strong in a race dominated on speed.”
Winona Costin (Arctic Thunder): “Just got whacked on the head a couple of times.”
Keagan Latham (Unanimous): “Head butts me out of the barriers so I had to ride him cold. Was really happy with how he finished off.”
