Jockey Quotes - Doncaster Mile

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $4,000,000 Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Zac Purton (Mr Brightside): “Obviously the connection I have with David (Hayes - father of co-trainers Ben and JD Hayes) in Hong Kong and getting to know his boys and having a bit of a drink and a laugh about this horse in this race a few weeks back, I won’t tell you what was said. We just drew the perfect gate and had the perfect run. It’s not easy to win one Doncaster, it’s very hard to win two, especially on testing ground like this. All the credit has got to go to the stable.”

“As soon as I come into the straight, I was traveling really well. When I gave him a squeeze he got there too quick, I had to idle him down a little bit again. He was labouring in the ground, but he’s so honest his class got him through.”

“They (Ben and JD) might even be better than he is. He’s (David) very proud of the way they’re going and obviously they had a great master, he taught them everything they know.

John Allen (My Oberon): “He has gone huge. I thought I was the winner half way down the straight. To the winner’s credit he dug deep.”

Andrew Gibbons (Nugget): “Ran out of his skin. Change the draw, race a pair closer and it could be a different result.”

Tim Clark (Alligator Blood): “Had a nice run. Just failed to handle the heavy track.”

Joao Moreira (Fangirl): “She ran alright. She ran a good race. Still believe to bring her very best is to have harder ground.”

Brenton Avdulla (Going Global): “Lovely mare. Travelled really well. As soon as I let her off the chain she was horrible. She’s never seen anything like that and struggled.”

Brett Prebble (Converge): “Just hated it.”

Rachel King (Gentleman Roy): “Really brave effort making the running but definitely doesn't like the going.”

Craig Newitt (Lion's Roar): “Ran OK. Just struggled in the ground.”

Taylor Marshall (Bandersnatch): “Probably just didn’t see the mile out.”

Zac Lloyd (Golden Mile): “Not too sure about that performance. I was so happy with the first half. It all worked out perfectly. As much as he was travelling he gone as quickly.”

Robbie Dolan (Mustang Valley): “Ran really well. Not beaten far in a good field. Will be hard to beat wherever she goes next start.”

Jay Ford (Hope In Your Heart): “Really revels in those conditions. Ran another great race.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Zougotcha): “Great run. She wasn’t able to get a slot with cover so had to slide forward. Found it hard in that ground today.”

Ben Thompson (Protagonist): “Just doesn’t suit him on this genuine heavy track. Travelled OK but not like last time albeit up in trip last time.”

Dean Yendall (Cepheus): “Tad fired up before the start. Over-raced. Never handled the going.”

Tyler Schiller (Communist): “Gave me a lovely ride. Thought the heavy ground just found him out.”

Dean Holland (Lindermann): “Just didn’t handle the surface today unfortunately.”

Michael Dee (Osipenko): “Super run. Had all the favours. Thought he was going to be right there and stuck to his task well.”
