Jockey Quotes - Champagne Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $600,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Joao Moriera (Militarize): “That proves I was on such a good horse. He impressed me with the way how he attacked the line. He deserved the win because he’s a trier and no doubt about it you can’t get any better.

“He’s a good horse, he’s given me that feeling before. I went to the race with plenty of confidence.

“I think the sky is the limit for this horse. Based on the way of how he has done it today, mile is not a problem and I can see him even running 2000m or maybe even further. Just by the way how he travels underneath, respecting the rider. He will be such a versatile type of horse.

“I had big hopes, but I didn’t think he was going to win that impressively. He was exposed wide, had to face the breeze, covering ground and he was the winner a long (from) home. He attacked the line like he wanted to win.”

Tim Clark (Bases Loaded): “He ran really well. We got a nice lead and gave a strong kick but the winner was a bit too strong for him.”

Brett Prebble (Townsend): “What a lovely horse. His third start so he’s run super. Had to cart the field up and a very honest effort.”

James McDonald (Don Corleone): “He struggled to run the mile out.”

Nash Rawiller (Tom Kitten): “We got involved in a scrimmage that first 100m. A big horse like he is and I ended up in a spot I didn't want to be. Luck never got much better for the rest of the race. He’s a nice horse and I’m sure he will come back well.”

Tom Marquand (Make A Call): “He’s run a solid race and probably feels like he is starting to mature a bit now.”

Brenton Avdulla (Felix The Scat): “He struggled a long way out. He is such a big heavy horse. He was no good in the ground.”

Craig Williams (Kintyre): “He is quite a raw horse. There is a lot of upside to him. Be interesting to see how he comes back as a 3yo.”

Dylan Gibbons (Pier Pressure): “She just lacked a bit of maturity.”

Robbie Dolan (Mah Ali): “She is actually a nice filly but just not today. Thrown in the deep end a little bit.”
