Jockey Quotes - ATC Australian Derby

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $2,000,000 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick.

Tim Clark (Major Beel): “He traveled a bit strong throughout because he’s come out of two really fast run races. Obviously up in trip to a really steady mile and a half, he just over traveled a bit throughout but that was helping him get through the ground. I felt them coming down the side but was just mindful of trying to hold onto him and help him as long as I could. He showed a great turn of foot at the top of the straight. On the line late, the second horse was coming to me, but he really dug in and fought hard like last week. Thankfully he was able to get his head in front today.”

“I was keen to stick hard fence because most of the track has been used and chewed up a fair bit. But the inside looked alright cantering around so I thought I’d give it a go.”

“Massive thrill to win a race like this and give Gai her first. I’ve been able to win a couple of races to give Gai her first, but there’s not a lot she hasn’t won. It’s nice to tick this box. I’ve got a really good friend involved in the ownership, so yeah it’s a great thrill.”

“Obviously the support I get from Gai and Adrian (Bott), I wouldn’t be here without them. It’s a bit of payback for them.”

Brett Prebble (Virtuous Circle): “Ran enormous. Didn’t really need the dodgem cars at the half mile. Got off the deck but the deep ground took its toll. Lovely horse going forward.”

Joao Moreira (Suizuro): “An impressive run. Off the track but hit the line pretty well.”

Hugh Bowman (Sharp 'N' Smart): “Had a beautiful run in a stop-start affair. Was in the right spot. Don’t think he let down on the heavy track.”

Mark Zahra (Elliptical): “He ran well enough. Prefers it a bit drier.”

James McDonald (Pericles): “He tried hard. Just the ground.”

Ryan Maloney (Williamsburg): “Began a lot better then he usually does and found myself too close.”

Zac Purton (Andalus): “He over-raced a little bit. Didn't like the ground.”

Damian Lane (Full Of Sincerity): “Unfortunately it didn’t work out from the 1000m mark. By the time I got clear air the race was over.”

Ben Melham (Japanese Emperor): “Struggled to settle in the putridly run race. Was in trouble going the Sydney way.”

Reece Jones (Tapildoodledo): “Got shuffled back a little bit in a stop-start race. Laboured in the heavy going.”

Jordan Childs (High Approach): “Ran really well. Hit the line strongly.”

Tom Marquand (Stroke Of Luck): “Was a bit keen and wide the way.”

John Allen (Cheval Savant): “Was a little keen. Struggled late.”

Brenton Avdulla (Domingo): “Had a soft run in front. When I tried to quicken, he struggled.”

Luke Dittman (Twigman): “Really happy with the run. A bit tougher competition than he’s faced and held his own.”
