Inaugural Running Of $2m The Ingham At Royal Randwick

The inaugural running of the Group 2 $2 million The Ingham – a major feature of Australian Turf Club’s summer festival of racing – headlines one of Sydney’s most popular racedays of the festive season

The Ingham Day honours global icons of horse racing Mr Bob Ingham AO and Mr Jack Ingham AO and raises funds and awareness for the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.

Entry to Royal Randwick this Saturday is free for frontline healthcare and emergency service workers to recognise their contribution to the community. Pre-registration is required, and identification at entry for complimentary redemption.

The 10-race card with 156 acceptors also includes the Listed $500,000 Inglis Nursery for two-year-olds.

Both feature races have added incentive – the winner of the $2m The Ingham gains ballot exemption from the Group 1 $4m Doncaster Mile next autumn while prizemoney earned in the Inglis Nursery (equal to a Metropolitan race) is added to the prizemoney order of entry for the Group 1 $5m Longines Golden Slipper.

The $2m The Ingham (formerly run as the Villiers Stakes) has attracted a capacity field of 20 runners plus four emergencies including defending champion Brutality. The Villiers Stakes at Royal Randwick was first run in 1892.

Saturday is the 14th running of The Inglis Nursery – a race which boasts an honour roll of exceptional youngsters such as Wild Ruler, She Will Reign, Extreme Choice and Mossfun in recent years.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said Bob and Jack Ingham and their families had been a part of the fabric of Sydney racing for many decades.

“We are delighted to join with the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and the Ingham family on such a feature raceday," Mr Ross said.

“The increase in prizemoney to $2 million for The Ingham sees a high-class and capacity field headed in weights by Group 1 winner Huetor and a highly credentialled international performer in Sunshine Rising.

“The Inglis Nursery also continues to be a feature of this raceday and has a history of producing not only Longines Golden Slipper winners but star colts at stud in future years."

Second Emergency in The Ingham – Nugget – opened the $4 TAB favourite (now into $3.60) for trainers Ciaron Maher & David Eustace and jockey Jason Collett as they hope to gain a run.

Group 1-winner Huetor trained by Peter and Paul Snowden with Kerrin McEvoy to ride is at $6, ahead of Brutality ($8) with Riodini and Dajraan at $8.50.

Trainer Mark Newnham is looking to win the race for the third time in four years with former Hong Kong galloper Sunshine Rising ($15) with Tom Sherry aboard.

In the Inglis Nursery, Rosehill Gardens trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have the heavily backed early favourite in Facile ($2.60-$2.20) for jockey Brenton Avdulla. The Trapeze Artist filly has won two city trials by 4.4 and 3.38 lengths.

Last start Rosehill Gardens winner Disneck ($4.80-$5.50, Rachel King) is one of three Bjorn Baker-trained runners as he looks to win the race for a second time.

Trainer Gary Portelli whose first Longines Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign won the Inglis Nursery also has two runners – Tango Fever ($23, Jason Collett) and Mercury Rose ($101, Sam Clipperton).

Two horses high in betting are I Am Invincible filly Blanc De Blanc for Michael Freedman and jockey Tommy Berry ($5 into $4.40) and Shalaa colt The Little Pumper (6-$7.50) trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott for jockey Tim Clark.
