Harry Just Wild About Everest

By Brad Gray

Harry Angel returned a winner at York overnight and trainer Clive Cox immediately flagged that The Everest is on his wish list for the one-time highest rated sprinter in the world.

The Godolphin-owned colt stalked the speed in the G2 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes and despite giving away weight to all of his rivals and being first up, he accounted for them without too much fuss.

"The Everest would be nice if we had a slot but that is not for me to decide and that is a long way off," Cox told Racing UK.

That will be music to the ears of Everest slot holders given nine spots are still open with only Trapeze Artist, Redzel and In Her Time guaranteed starts as it currently stands. Only last week, slot holder Damion Flower publicly expressed his admiration for Harry Angel.

Harry Angel will now head to Royal Ascot for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes where interestingly, he’ll face not only Redkirk Warrior and Merchant Navy, who is now trained by Aidan O’Brien, but also US sprinter Bound For Nowhere, with trainer Wesley Ward already signalling interest in tackling Royal Randwick’s $13 feature in October.

"He’ll go straight to Royal Ascot now. I’m grateful to Sheikh Mohammed for keeping him in training for another year,” Cox said of Harry Angel.

Ironically, given his name, there has always been a rogue element to Harry Angel but Cox likes what he has seen from him this time in.

“He has been more grown up and mature this year,” Cox said.

“We’ve not squeezed him off the bridle at home. He’ll come forward. He was far more composed and showed his true form.”

That sentiment was echoed by jockey Adam Kirby, who earlier in the week labelled Harry Angel a “once in a lifetime horse.”

“He’s grown up a lot,” Kirby said.

“He just has that in him. All the good ones have a bit of fire in them. I’m really pleased with his attitude and the way he has done it.

“He got fired up when we first got in there, and he has those problems in the past. He just does that. I’m pleased we got the run out of him and got the freshness out of him.”

Harry Angel is currently a $15 chance with TAB Fixed Odds for The Everest.
