ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 5 # 11 – CEOLWULF
He's gone to a new level this preparation since returning as a gelding, and he was impressive winning last start at Rosehill a few weeks ago. The four-year-old made a long-sustained sprint, clocking some of the meeting's fastest closing sectionals, and he went through the line with style. The rise to 2000m third-up on Saturday is ideal; he drops 5kg in weight, which will enhance his closing speed, and James McDonald rides again.
ROYAL RANDWICK – VALUE BET: Race 4 # 4 – SIR ARTIE
He produced one of his career peak figures at Warwick Farm last start back on a dry surface, and he savaged the line to score. The five-year-old stalked a very slow tempo, built momentum and charged late to run the meeting's third-fastest final 200m split. He's drawn tricky but is at optimal fitness and the anticipated genuine race shape suits. In addition, he can rate to win, and the rise to 1400m is ideal.
ROYAL RANDWICK – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 10 # 3 – MORAVIA
He resumed in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m), and his run had hidden sectional merit. The Michael Freedman-trained galloper had the pace/bias against him but still rocked one of the meeting's quickest final 600m sectionals in 32.00. He drops significantly in grade, only rises 3kg in weight, and James McDonald rides for the first time. Further, his career peak figure came at this track/distance and expect a positive ride.
NEWCASTLE – PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 4 # 11 – MARAIS
He looks primed to peak third-up coming through a high-rating race which has since produced a subsequent winner. The lightly raced galloper always faced the breeze at a fast tempo, sprinted and went down fighting to finish second with a gap to third. He profiles well for this event, and repeating his last start effort/figure put him in the finish.
