Expressway Stakes Day At Rosehill Begins Golden Road To Autumn

The return of a rising young star along with two early pathway races to the world’s richest race for the two-year-olds headlines the Australian Turf Club’s Expressway Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Godolphin’s multiple Group 1 winning colt Anamoe has been strongly supported ($1.75-$1.70 on TAB) for trainer James Cummings and jockey James McDonald as he begins an autumn campaign in the Group 2 $200,000 XXXX Expressway Stakes.

Anamoe, a winner of the Group 1 Inglis Sires at Royal Randwick last Autumn before winning a Caufield Guineas and runner up in a Cox Plate, is also an early TAB favourite in two major Sydney Autumn features – the Group 1 $3 million Star Doncaster Mile and Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Joint $7.50 TAB second favourites in Saturday’s XXXX Expressway Stakes are Rosehill Gardens home track specialist Standout for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou and jockey Kerrin McEvoy, and Group-1 winning mare Forbidden Love trained by Richard and Michael Freedman with champion jockey Hugh Bowman aboard.

Saturday also sees the running of two important pathway races to the Group 1 $5m Longines Golden Slipper – just seven weeks out from the iconic race for two-year-olds.

The Group 3 $160,000 Fujitsu General Canonbury Stakes sees Sydney’s champion trainer Chris Waller with the early favourites in Great Barrier Reef ($1.95-$2) ridden by James McDonald and Breeders Plate runner up Zambezi River ($4.60-$4.80) with Tim Clark aboard.

Chris Waller – chasing his first Longines Golden Slipper – also saddles up third TAB favourite Robusto ($7-$7.50) for reigning and multiple Longines Golden Slipper-winning jockey Tommy Berry.

In the Group 3 $160,000 Widden Stakes for the fillies, Longines Golden Slipper winning trainers Peter and Paul Snowden have the $3 TAB favourite Ebhaar ridden by Sam Clipperton.

In a competitive betting race Ojai ($5.50-$6) for James Cummings and James McDonald, Drisana ($6-$6.50) Peter and Paul Snowden and Kerrin McEvoy and Queen Of The Ball ($7.50-$8.50) Richard and Michael Freedman and Rachel King are next in betting.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said Saturday began a weekly series of pathway races to the Group 1 $5 million Longines Golden Slipper to be run at Rosehill Gardens on 19 March.

“With less than 50 days until the Longines Golden Slipper, every Saturday in Sydney will now see new contenders emerge for the ultimate prize in racing for two-year-old colts and fillies," Mr Ross said.

“The Fujitsu General Canonbury Stakes for the colts and geldings and Widden Stakes for fillies on Saturday are three weeks away from the Silver Slipper Stakes, the first of five key pathway races that can earn connections a $1 million bonus from the Australian Turf Club.

“A horse with the quality and race record of Anamoe provides further star power on Saturday as Sydney heads towards several months of world-class racing through autumn."

The Rosehill Gardens course proper was rated a Good 4 on Thursday afternoon. For all racing, general and ticketing information for Saturday and upcoming racedays during Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival visit australianturfclub.com.au
