Deamer Keen To Be Part Of Young Guns' Premiership Tale

By Ray Hickson

Trainer Jason Deamer would be more than happy to help both star apprentices Zac Lloyd and Dylan Gibbons in their premiership quests when they ride stablemates Ottilie and Decadent Tale respectively in separate races at Randwick on Saturday.

Lloyd partnered Ottilie to a dominant last start win and Deamer was more than keen to retain him for the Schweppes Handicap (1400m) while Gibbons will need to produce a pearler from a wide gate on the consistent Decadent Tale in the Midway Handicap (1600m).

Four wins separated Gibbons, on 69 wins, and Lloyd going into Wednesday's Canterbury program with five more meetings remaining.

The Newcastle trainer is confident both horses are winning chances if luck goes their way, particularly as far as Decadent Tale is concerned, so he sees them as good rides for the young guns.

“Zac’s riding in very good form and there’s a good competition on at the moment with him and Dylan and it’s good to be involved,’’ Deamer said.

“Dylan texted me straight away and said ‘what have you done wrong’ and I said ‘that’s why you’re on board mate’.

“I’m sure Dylan will give her every chance and with a bit of luck will be in the finish.”

Ottilie led all the way to a third-up win at Warwick Farm over 1300m late last month and on the back of the almost three length margin there Deamer sees an extra 100m as no issue.

The four-year-old is in her second preparation with Deamer and he says she’s continued to improve and strengthen up and that’s reflecting in her racing.

“I think that’s what I can put it down to, maybe she's a bit more relaxed, but this time in she’s stepped up to another level,’’ he said.

“In her first run she was probably a bit fresh and just overdid it a bit, the second run she had no luck caught three wide but third-up she was on fire.

“The way she won last start you wouldn’t think she’d have a problem running it out.”

There’ll be no changing the winning formula so expect Ottilie, $3.80 with TAB on Wednesday, to lead and with the rail out Deamer hopes she can repeat the performance.

“That’s generally how she likes to be ridden, she’s a free flowing horse and she can kick off that,’’ he said.

“She doesn’t have a dashing sprint but she likes to get everything off the bit and get them chasing.”

Decadent Tale is back in Midway company after an eye-catching fourth behind Flashing Steel at Canterbury almost a month ago.

Ottilie wins at Warwick Farm on June 28

She was beaten just on two lengths by Wrathful in a Midway at Rosehill three runs back and a similar margin by Miracle Spin at the Scone carnival’s Midway in mid-May.

Deamer said the long run from the Randwick 1600m start will give Gibbons a good chance to place the five-year-old to advantage in the run.

“She just can’t seem to draw a barrier most days,’’ Deamer said.

“She rarely runs a bad race. Last start she had to go back to last around Canterbury and she finished off really well.”
