Carnival Not Tempting Payne With Promising Shohisha

By Ray Hickson

Trainer David Payne is in no rush with promising filly Shohisha and even if she wins at Rosehill on Saturday he won’t hesitate to miss the bulk of the autumn carnival if it’s in her best interests.

Shohisha has only raced three times and Payne gave a glimpse of what he thinks of her potential by running her in the Group 2 Furious Stakes on the back of her debut maiden win.

She returned with a closing second in the Listed Gosford Guineas at Wyong and Payne has found a Midway Handicap (1200m) on her home track as a stepping stone.

“She hasn’t furnished out yet and once she really gets strong she’s going to get smart because she’s shown the ability already,’’ Payne said.

“If I’m right about how good she is I think she will be a good filly later on.

“We’ve got to look after her, if you do that they reward you later.”

The three-year-old, $3.20 with TAB on Thursday, just found the 1200m around Wyong a bit sharp for her but Payne liked how she closed off the race to run Dance To The Boom to three-quarters of a length.

He said he’s not too concerned about staying at the trip for her second run back though ultimately she will be effective over a bit more ground.

“She just struggled around the corner at Wyong but it was a good run,’’ he said.

“I just want to give her another run after this and put her in the paddock again, she’s still immature.

“We’ll look at a black type race in February and put her in the paddock after that.”

It’s unknown how the filly will handle the likely heavy ground but her dam Consommateur was unbeaten in two starts on heavy, both rated 10, including the 2017 Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill.

Kerrin McEvoy has his first ride on Shohisha in the Midway and Payne would like to think she can make a bit of use of a favourable barrier.

“She can only improve. She’ll be in the first three or four from that draw,’’ he said.
