Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 21st September

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting. Selections based on a soft to heavy track.

Race 1 - 1:25PM VINERY STALLIONS PLATE (1200 METRES)

10. Parisal is a nicely bred Godolphin filly on debut and she’s shown more than enough in her two recent trials to predict a solid first-up showing. Draw could be a bit sticky with a 6m rail but on paper she should be very competitive.

Dangers: 3. Northuldra is very interesting, first-up since February last year where she showed a little bit of promise in stakes races. Plenty to like about her two trials and from gate one a soft passage looks likely. Keep safe. 5. Shohei might be a small risk on a heavy track given she was safely held before a break on a soft 7 at Sandown but she did win the trial over Northuldra and has to be considered. 4. Principessa is an ex-Kiwi now with Joe Pride and she hasn’t really been exposed in her trials. On face value this might be a shade short for her but on a wet track it wouldn’t surprise to see her strong late.

How to play it: Parisal WIN ($2.10 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 2 - 2:00PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

7. Cinderella Days was scratched at the barriers last week at Warwick Farm and lands here with gate one. She’s done nothing wrong winning both starts to date, she should find a spot on speed or just behind the lead and handles all conditions. Go well.

Dangers: 6. Lady Harlem went for a break after a nice win on heavy ground here back in June and showed readiness for a handy first-up run with a trial win over 1050m last week. With any luck from the barrier she can show up. 2. Burgunder showed a heap of promise in two starts back in April including a strong win in the Clarendon at Hawkesbury. Trialled three times with space between them and the latest wasn’t overly flattering but respecting him on race form. 9. Insurrection started favourite in the race won by Cinderella Days but has a better set up with a kinder draw and blinkers going on. Can’t be overlooked.

How to play it: Cinderella Days WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 3 - 2:35PM DOWNLOAD THE TAB APP TODAY HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

1. Roots stands out on form and has struck a very winnable race. She is yet to win away from first-up or on a heavy track but she’ll only need to repeat her performance from Warwick Farm a few weeks ago to take this one out.

Dangers: 2. Little Mix was two months between runs when a beaten favourite at Eagle Farm over 1400m, did make some ground without threatening there. Will improve with the extra ground and proven in all conditions. If there’s a threat to Roots she’s the one. 7. Yankee Hussel is coming off a maiden win straight into a BM78 but she did have form around some smart two-year-olds last season and strikes a race lacking depth outside the top. Has a case. 3. Shosha was first-up from a 12 month break when just fair in fifth at Hawkesbury two weeks ago. Fitter and down in weight but no wet track form to go on.

How to play it: Roots WIN ($1.55 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 4 - 3:10PM FURPHY HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

3. Point Counterpoint did a super job to win first-up on a heavy track at Tamworth off a nine month break with no trial. Won a Highway second-up last time in and while the draw is a bit ordinary for him with any luck he can go close.

Dangers: 9. James Barrie is the probable leader here and if he gets away with it cheaply could run a cheeky race at odds. Not disgraced last time when 1400m up to 1900m here two weeks ago behind Inuwashi. Each-way. 4. Cinque Torri has raced well of late winning two of his four starts since a freshen up. Does tend to get back and run on but was able to sit handier at Wyong last start, and with the extra trip might be on speed again. 8. Green Flash failed badly when right in the market at Warwick Farm three weeks ago and no issues could be found. Placed in first two runs back on wet ground at this track so entitled to another chance.

How to play it: Point Counterpoint E/W ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 5 - 3:45PM IRISH YEARLING SALES HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

2. Inuwashi picks himself in this race which looks to be similarly run to the one he raced away with two weeks ago. He enjoyed a good gallop sitting back near last and rounded them up easily. It cost him 3kg but he’ll get every chance to repeat the dose.

Dangers: 7. Sanstoc comes through the same race and while she did have her chance, hitting the lead on the turn, she has that 3kg turnaround and should be better for the run at 1900m. Go well. 4. Akahata has been solid with second placings in both runs back and is ready for the step up in distance. Was just a bit soft late here last time so will be fitter and draws to get the perfect run. 6. Microna is a game on pacer who does find it hard to win them but certainly not hard to put himself somewhere in the finish in his races. Gave a good sight in a Midway last start and is a must for the trifectas.

How to play it: Inuwashi WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Inuwashi wins at Canterbury on September 7

Race 6 - 4:20PM BOWERMANS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

11. Cholante looks stacked with promise and she handled the step up in grade second-up at Wyong in her stride with a soft win. They will need to be able to make ground for her to finish over the top here but on what we’ve seen so far she can continue through the classes.

Dangers: 1. Miss Jay Fox has been racing well since breaking through for a win at Kensington in August. Was up to Saturday grade when a handy third to Sneaky Paige at Randwick last time and is a big chance here. 8. Audette is another up and comer who won her first three starts before jumping in grade to a sound third as favourite at Muswellbrook back in April. Trialling well and could easily measure up to this. 4. Duchy Of Savoy was close up in the same race at Randwick as Miss Jay Fox when second-up and finishing fourth. Draw an issue for her but stays under notice.

How to play it: Cholante WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 7 - 4:55PM EARTHLIGHT @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

Kris Lees has a strong hand here. 3. Samoot was super impressive winning over this course first-up last prep on a heavy track and she draws to have the chance to repeat it. Trials have been on the quiet side but if there’s any support she has each-way claims.

Dangers: 2. Geo hasn’t raced since taking out a Provincial-Midway Championships qualifier back in March on a heavy track and he missed the final. Yet to win fresh but trials have been sound and he’s right in this. 1. Loch Eagle is a proven wet tracker who graduated to stakes company last time in over a little more ground. He was impressive winning his first two runs in that prep and has to be respected. 7. Party For One ran well first-up under the circumstances at Randwick after going back from a wide gate. Draws nicely here and while she will still drift back she is proven here and her Group form from last prep is hard to ignore. Likely improver.

How to play it: Samoot E/W ($9.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
