Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 21st June

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting. Selections based on a good track.

Race 1 - 12:50PM ALL TOO HARD @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

3. Tropical Squall has looked the goods in two trials, particularly the latest which was an easy win at Randwick. You’d imagine from gate one she’ll bounce to the front and take plenty of running down on what we’ve seen.

Dangers: 4. Wezza ran a nice race on debut then improved off it for a closing third behind Commemorative two weeks ago. The way she hit the line suggested the extra ground would be in her favour. Go well. 5. Belledonne was a drifter in betting on debut and settled out the back before making some late ground. That was a month ago, fitter for it and she’s a likely improver. 1. Kind Words has trialled twice and the second of them was better than the first. Wouldn’t surprise if she filled a placing.

How to play it: Tropical Squall WIN ($1.65 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 2 - 1:25PM BIVOUAC @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

8. One Last Shot did everything right in winning his only public trial leading into his debut. Led comfortably and travelled well, responding to some small urgings to edge away late. You’d think there’ll be some improvement with that hitout and he should go well.

Dangers: 1. The Little Pumper was a beaten favourite after leading in a maiden won by Militarize back in February. First trial back was better than the second but should be around the mark. 11. Sound The Siren started $101 but found the line nicely late behind Congregation here a month ago. Slightly better gate here and is not without an each-way chance if he can repeat. 9. Royal Trapeze debuts with a couple of nice enough trials and gate one so should get his chance to perform.

How to play it: One Last Shot WIN ($3.20 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 3 - 2:00PM SCHWEPPES PLATE (1250 METRES)

8. Princess Rayaa found the line when it was all over after being held up early in the straight when resuming behind Nostalgia here two weeks ago. Draws well here and if she can make use of it this looks her race. Hard to beat.

Dangers: 4. Sumo Star is a consistent type who was okay when back in distance behind Epic Proportions two weeks ago. Form around his placing three runs back is good and is entitled to another chance. 6. Double Scoop comes through the same race as Princess Rayaa and wasn’t beaten far by that filly first-up. She did have her chance by the same token but has to be considered. 1. Dapper Dancer was placed at Warwick Farm at big odds then backed it up with a placing at Wyong where he tried hard but was no match for the winner. Has a place show again.

How to play it: Princess Rayaa WIN ($1.70 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Race 4 - 2:35PM DRINKWISE PLATE (1550 METRES)

4. Kapakiri didn’t compete early when resuming at Warwick Farm but warmed up late for a handy fourth in an on pace dominated race, and the form is not bad with the runner-up winning since. Inside gate and up in trip he should be in the finish.

Dangers: 1. Discover made his debut at Newcastle and wasn’t disgraced finishing on for fourth over 1250m. Fitter for it and extra distance should suit. Good chance. 2. Futtaim seemed to have his chance first-up at Newcastle a few weeks ago but he did hold his ground okay. Another likely to appreciate a bit further so well worth keeping in mind. 8. Ichiban was always well back on debut behind King Colorado at Kembla but blinkers on and up in distance look positives. Could be an improver.

How to play it: Kapakiri WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 5 - 3:10PM FURPHY HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

11. Okataina looks well placed to get up on speed and give a big sight. Backed up his maiden win with a solid showing leading and boxing on behind Grebeni at Rosehill. That form has held up and he can only be at his peak now fourth-up. Hard to run down.

Dangers: 1. Asgoodassobergets enjoyed a nice run to win here first-up then sent to Flemington earlier this month and ran an even fourth. Tricky gate but claim brings him in okay with the big class drop. Definite chance. 5. Our Bambino is racing quite well and followed an upset win at Kembla with a nice third over this course behind Manbehindthemoney two weeks ago. If he runs up to that he's in the mix again. 10. Fun Sunday contested the same race as Okataina and finished a close fifth. Racing well at this sort of level and has a show.

How to play it: Okataina WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Okataina runs fourth at Rosehill on June 3

Race 6 - 3:45PM TAB HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Lucky Variety is a promising filly who worked her way through to this grade over summer beating Lavish Empire at Randwick in January. Warmed up well in latest trial, yet to run a bad race and wouldn’t expect that to change here.

Dangers: 8. Stolen Jade looks to be back in business with a closing second at Kensington a bit over a month ago her best effort for a while. Since had a tickover trial and won it well, she’s more than capable of winning this. 5. Star Spirit had her first run for Matthew Smith with a handy third here two weeks ago. Down 2kg and fitter. Must be considered. 6. King Of Naples started favourite when resuming and sat outside the leader but couldn’t go on two weeks ago. Had trialled well leading in so inclined to give another chance.

How to play it: Lucky Variety WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 7 - 4:20PM TOYOTA FORKLIFTS HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

7. Hell Hath No Fury lost touch with them at first Sydney run but did get interested late and hit the line strongly to finish midfield behind Resonator. Blinkers go on and drawn kindly, up in distance, if she can take a position she should be very competitive.

Dangers: 2. Flashing Steel has the form on the board with three wins on end including twice over this course. Carried the 60kg to in two weeks ago and after the claim has the same weight here. Hard to ignore. 5. Highballer tried hard to run Flashing Steel down in that race but meets him worse at the weights with no claim this time. Regardless, he’s one of the chances. 3. Taraashoq had some support first-up for Bjorn Baker but didn’t fire as expected. Second-up record is solid, drawn well and up in distance so there’s a recipe for improvement.

How to play it: Hell Hath No Fury WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
