Canterbury Winners - Tips For Friday Night 10th December

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Friday’s Canterbury night meeting. Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 6:00PM RANVET PLATE (1900 METRES)

5. Miss Delia might have her chance to break through out to 1900m after a couple of handy placings where she’s been strong at the finish. Left a bit flat on the turn at Wyong last start but picked up nicely late and drawn to get all the favours. Hard to beat.

Dangers: 10. Son Of Emperor was sent out a well supported favourite second-up at Gosford over this trip and while he had his chance he kept coming. Probably has to roll forward and is one of the chances. 6. Slick Heels jumps quickly in distance here after running on from near last behind the placegetters over 1300m at Newcastle. Wouldn’t shock if she filled a placing. 1. Contradeel has been in the market in both runs since a break on heavy tracks, some improvement last time and perhaps up further in trip he can improve.

How to play it: Miss Delia WIN ($1.90 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Miss Delia runs third at Wyong on November 25

Race 2 - 6:30PM TAB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

6. Party For One put the writing on the wall with an eye-catching first-up third on a heavy 10 here two weeks ago. She settled last and made up a heap of ground out wide late. Will need some luck but if they overdo it or you can run on she should be in the finish.

Dangers: 3. Minouche is a Godolphin filly on debut and she’s trialled okay of late behind Part For One and Mad Darcey, both of which line up against her here. Draws well and must be kept on the safe side. 4. Falsetto had genuine excuses after a wide run when in the market on debut then pulled up lame after failing at Warwick Farm in June. Trial winner coming into this, she will likely go forward and could give a big sight.

How to play it: Party For One E/W ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Party For One runs second at Canterbury on November 26

Race 3 - 7:00PM SHARP EXTENSIVE IT HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

3. Pizarro was expected to win on debut as a short priced favourite and while he didn’t it was still a very handy introduction. He sat wide and endured a tougher run than the winner but still found the line. Drawn to be much handier if he can hold a spot and should go close.

Dangers: 1. Broken Hill was forced to work leading off the fence at his first outing a couple of weeks ago and was only run down in the last 100m as he shortened stride. Fitter for that and drawn the rails. Definite chance. 9. Lovelier hasn’t been disgraced in her three starts and she was the horse keeping Broken Hill busy in that race and also only weakened late. She’s not far off a win and is an each-way hope. 11. Transformation charged into third place on resuming at Randwick then and even effort in the same race in question at Canterbury running a close fourth. Has to be in the mix again.

How to play it: Pizarro WIN ($2.70 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Pizarro runs second at Hawkesbury on November 18

Race 4 - 7:30PM XXXX HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

5. Made By Khan is lightly raced and looks to be on the up this time around. Sound at his first run for the new stable at Gosford then looked strong late at Newcastle on a heavy track. Most of his rivals have found their mark and he should be very competitive.

Dangers: 4. Grand Rock ran his best race for the Waller yard at his fourth run from a 12 month break though not sure he loved the heavy 10 in his third at Rosehill to Lord Ardmore. A soft range track would be a plus and he can run well. 2. Witsabouthim was a drifter in betting at his first run since coming from NZ and just boxed on fairly at Sandown on a good 3. Two wins in NZ were on soft tracks and with Nash Rawiller taking the ride he’s one to be wary of. 1. Ladylovestogamble is on the back up after an even effort behind Huetor at Rosehill last Saturday. Back in class and she’s more than capable of being in the finish.

How to play it: Made By Khan WIN ($3.10 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Made By Khan wins at Newcastle on November 28

Race 5 - 8:00PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

5. Key Largo can find one better but he does look well placed if the speed in this race on paper works out in real life. Might have been a shade stiff at Gosford first-up but was winding up strongly late. Drawn to get the trail off the speed and this is his chance if he gets the breaks.

Dangers: 2. Conscript has led all the way to win his past two at Newcastle and Gosford and drops 3kg here after the claim. Likely to have company up front but he’s on the way up. 1. Shadow Bridge managed to hold off Key Largo to win that race at Gosford. Scratchings have helped his cause and he could take running down. 8. Almighty Rising started favourite in the same race and had his chance on the speed before weakening. Worth one more chance.

How to play it: Key Largo WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Key Largo runs second at Gosford on November 26

Race 6 - 8:30PM KIA EVENING STAR (1550 METRES)

4. Miss Einstein is entitled to win with even luck up to her preferred distance range after two very handy efforts since a spell. Drifted in betting second-up on a heavy 10 but charged at the winner to just miss. Draws the inside, last win was on a wet track over this course in July. Gets her chance.

Dangers: 2. Heza Gentleman is chasing a Canterbury hat-trick after wins over this course in the past month. Led two runs back then sat just off the speed and powered away two weeks ago. Wetter the better for him and he will give a good account again. 6. Monegal was 2000m back to 1400m when running on into fourth at Kembla last time. Has been thereabouts but does need another win. Yet to miss a place at Canterbury and the trip suits. Has a show. 7. Banger is racing well without winning at the moment, favourite when runner-up at Canberra last time and had his chance. Place hopes here.

How to play it: Miss Einstein WIN ($2.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Miss Einstein runs second at Canterbury on November 26

Race 7 - 9:00PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

4. Miss Jay Fox is ideally suited here coming back in class off a solid enough first-up fourth behind Dragonstone at Kembla. She has the gate to find a spot with cover, trialled well going into her fresh run and can only be fitter. Clearly the horse to beat.

Dangers: 8. Telluride could be dangerous first-up since February. Showed plenty of promise in that first prep and has trialled twice, not overly tested, leading into what will be her Sydney debut. Any support would be significant. 9. Sneaky Paige led and raced away when resuming win an easy maiden win here on a heavy 10 two weeks ago. Has the wide gate this time around but if she gets across without too much effort could easily repeat. 5. Forzanini toughed it out to win narrowly first-up at Gosford after sitting near the speed. Like to see the track improve but will be fitter and is honest.

How to play it: Miss Jay Fox WIN ($3.70 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Miss Jay Fox runs fourth at Kembla on November 20

Race 8 - 9:30PM MINISTER KEVIN ANDERSON HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

7. Miracle Day does look a very promising type and while this is his biggest test so far there’s every reason to think he can pass it. Dominant at Muswellbrook fresh then under 62kg put panels on them at Newcastle. Nicely drawn, Hugh Bowman rides and he can win again.

Dangers: 14. Marnix is a recent addition to the Richard Litt team and he hit the line well at Gosford with a month between runs. Has form around the likes of Kiku and Expat which is solid Saturday form. Well worth including. 12. Nikau hasn’t raced since August when she was narrowly beaten at Kembla over a mile. Improved nicely into her second trial, will need some luck but can’t be overlooked. 10. Windsweep mixed his form last time in but did win two of five run. Worked home smoothly in his recent trial and could run a cheeky race while fresh.

How to play it: Miracle Day WIN ($2.40 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
