Canterbury Park Winners - Tips For Friday 24th February

By Nick Berney

Tips and race by race preview by Nick Berney for Friday's Canterbury Park meeting. Selections based on a soft track. Monitor for bias/pattern.

Race 1 - 6:00PM RACING AND SPORTS HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Debutante 9. Tu Qui Santuzza has trialled well in preparation for her first-up assignment. The filly was ridden out in her first heat, but she showed the key asset of acceleration and picked her rivals up late to score. Further, she hit the line well in her second trial running third behind subsequent victor Introducing and Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) winner Platinum Jubilee. The Waterhouse & Bott trained runner maps well from barrier one and the 1100m suits.

Dangers: 6. Full Revolution kept trying to the line on debut at Newcastle and ran solid closing splits. She will relish the rise in trip and brings a race experience edge. First starter 10. Untouchable Legend won a recent trial at Rosehill under light riding. She is learning but undoubtedly has ability, and James McDonald rides. 1. Chevron drops in grade and maps well.

How to play it: Tu Qui Santuzza WIN ($2.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Tu Qui Santuzza runs third in a trial at Randwick on February 6

Race 2 - 6:30PM TAB HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Lightly raced improver 7. Lomandra had all favours when winning first-up at Warwick Farm, but she did it in style. The filly unleashed a sharp sprint and was in a duel for most of the straight, but she worried her rival out of it. Further, she went through the line full of energy and clocked the meeting's fastest final 200m split in 10.84. The Hawkes trained galloper will only be fitter for that, can roll forward and will take some catching.

Dangers: 4. Demiana, who is a nice type, resumes, and she has trialled well recently at Rosehill. The three-year-old won well on debut after absorbing a strong tempo and then sprinted away from her rivals to score. She can remain unbeaten but has been well-found in the early market. 1. Silentstar had excuses last start but brings a race fitness edge. Expect an aggressive ride early, and he is a key late-market watch. 9. Par Five is a knockout chance, and 6. Street Gossip will look to have the last shot.

How to play it: Lomandra WIN ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Lomandra wins at Warwick Farm on February 8

Race 3 - 7:00PM FURPHY HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

Leaning towards 3. Auspicious Cloud who has a solid platform and is ready to improve third-up over more ground. The mare is coming out of two fast-run races this campaign, and she ran on well into third last start at Newcastle. Last prep, she produced her peak figures at this distance range on rain-affected ground, and she gets a similar setup here. Additionally, she represents value and can rate to win.

Dangers: 4. Master Of Rewards profiles as a knockout chance with a more positive race setup. He is rock-hard fit, receives a significant barrier change and gets in well at the weights after the astute claim for apprentice Zac Lloyd. 1. Wategos ran time winning last start at Kensington, bringing the best last start figure. He maps to control the pace and will take some catching. 6. Infinitive was blocked at a critical stage but found the line well at this track seven days ago. James McDonald rides and the backup suits.

How to play it: Auspicious Cloud WIN ($4.80 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Auspicious Cloud runs third at Newcastle on February 11

Race 4 - 7:30PM QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

Forgiving of 4. Owen County's first-up run at Kensington, where he missed the start and got too far back. Second up last prep, he produced one of his career peak figures at this track/distance on rain-affected ground and ran third. Moreover, repeating that effort will put him in the finish. The John Sargent trained galloper has a tricky draw, but he brings Group form lines and represents value. Each-way.

Dangers: 8. Sensationalisation was honest last start at this track distance when SPing favourite in a similar grade race. She will roll forward and be tough to get past. Market watch 5. Awesome John, who resumes and add 10. Charity Spirit to trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: Owen County E/W ($7.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Owen County last start at Kensington on February 3

Race 5 - 8:00PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

6. Jayanthi is a consistent type and produced a career peak figure when winning at Warwick farm last start. The mare drifted back from a tricky draw, had to make a long wide-sustained and clocked the meeting's fastest final 600m in 33.00. Moreover, there has been a subsequent winner to confirm the form. All key indicators suggest she can make it back-to-back wins and has a more positive race setup here. In addition, she maps to have all favours, brings a slight fitness edge and has a strong SP profile.

Dangers: 4. Pungo, who has a bright future, resumes here after a quiet trial where he went through the line full of energy. Last prep, he started favourite in the Group 3 Carbine Club (1600m), which must be respected and expect him to savage the line. Add 1. The Empire and 8. Twice As Special to trifectas and first fours.

How to play it: Jayanthi WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Jayanthi wins at Warwick Farm on February 8

Race 6 - 8:30PM PRECISE FIRE HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

Import 5. Wineglass Bay profiles well for this event, and his ratings/sectionals suggest he is ready to peak fourth-up. The gelding was well fancied late in the trade last start at Randwick in a stronger grade and was only narrowly beaten. Further, he had slight excuses but hit the line well, and a rise in distance here is ideal. The Waller trained galloper has a tricky map, but James McDonald rides, and he brings the clear best last start figure. Expect a bold showing.

Dangers: 10. Lovetheinvasion has been ticking over well this prep and is ready to do something fourth-up. Expect her to roll forward and give a sight. 1. Yukon is rock-hard fit and will be strong at the end of the 1900m. 3. Silent Agenda has tried hard all prep, and the blinkers come off.

How to play it: Wineglass Bay WIN ($1.75 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Wineglass Bay runs second at Rosehill on February 4

Race 7 - 9:00PM KIA CANTERBURY NIGHT SPRINT SERIES FINAL (1100 METRES)

5. Diamond Dealer has been a model of consistency this prep and was brave in defeat last start at Warwick Farm. The four-year-old raced wide throughout, albeit at a moderate pace and tried hard to the line running second. She profiles well for this event, with James McDonald taking over the riding duties, and her peak figure came at this track/distance. Additionally, going back to a rain-affected surface suits and expect her to take some catching.

Dangers: 4. Mars Mission can sprint well fresh and won a recent trial in style at Rosehill. He has a tricky map but expect him to storm down the middle of the track late. 1. Destination has multiple winning figures for this and maps well. However, some query back in distance. 2. Classy Jaybee will appreciate the soft going and drop in grade. Market watch 9. Ruby Kisses, who resumes and has trailed solidly.

How to play it: Diamond Dealer WIN ($2.70 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Diamond Dealer runs second at Warwick Farm on February 8

Race 8 - 9:30PM YES YES YES FIRST YEARLINGS HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

7. Kazou had excuses when running third at this track/distance in a high-rating race a fortnight ago, and her run was full of merit. After only one soft trial, the three-year-old was resuming, started a well-fancied $1.60 favourite, jumped awkwardly, and then got into a tricky spot throughout transit. Further, she was blocked at critical stages coming into the final straight, but once clear, she accelerated hard, clocking the equal fastest final 400m split of the meeting in 22.84 and went through the line full of energy. All key indicators, such as her ratings/sectional profile, suggest she will improve significantly from that effort and will derive a fitness benefit. The Chris Waller trained galloper has a positive race setup, and expect her to be hard to beat.

Dangers: The lightly raced 2. Junqueira has a strong record, and she can bounce back into the winner's stall here. The filly struck a wet track for the first time last start and was narrowly beaten in a similar grade race. She can rate to win and maps to have all favours. 5. Ithadtobezou beat Kazou last start, albeit starting at a longer price but must be considered. Add 11. Capri Of Tuffy who gets the blinkers on for the first time.

How to play it: Kazou WIN ($1.95 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Kazou runs third at Canterbury on February 10

Best Bet: Race 8 # 7 – Kazou

Next Best: Race 2 # 7 – Lomandra

Best Value: Race 4 # 4 – Owen County
