Golden Rose favourite In Secret wouldn’t be running in the Godolphin blue in Saturday’s feature Group 1 if it wasn’t for the BOBS Double Up incentive.
Vin Cox, Godolphin Australia’s Managing Director, said the racing powerhouse collects its Double Up vouchers through the year for use during the yearling sales and the entirety of In Secret’s $900,000 purchase price was funded by the scheme.
Had it not been for the Double Up program he said they may not have been active at the sale and somebody else would likely have snapped up the filly.
“Over the last couple of seasons we’ve been buying horses on the BOBS Double Up, using the double up keeps our horses racing here in NSW,’’ Cox said.
“We want to be participants in the market and it puts money back into the system which we feel we need to do.”
When a horse wins a BOBS bonus, connections have the option to take the cash bonus or earn twice the value with Double Up voucher.
It can then be used for the purchase of a BOBS eligible yearling, or a share in a syndicated BOBS eligible horse (through a licensed syndicator), at a Yearling or Ready to Run sale conducted by a participating Sales Company. Bonuses can be accumulated for a period of two years from the first bonus.
In Secret was was identified by Cox and trainer James Cummings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale in 2021 as a potential topline racehorse and addition to their broodmare band in the future.
She’s by I Am Invincible and her dam Eloping won seven races including two Group 3 and two Listed races.
“That particular year it was only James and myself at the Gold Coast and we bid on a few horses but we zeroed in on her,’’ Cox said.
“She’s very well bred, by the most commercial stallion in the country out of a stakeswinning mare so she has a very big pedigree.
“We’re trying to broaden our pedigree and bloodstock profile by participating in yearling sales and she was a very athletic filly and has proven to be so on the racetrack.”
Cox said in the space of just four starts In Secret has become a bargain given her stakes win in the Woodlands at her second start and Run To The Rose victory.
A Group 1 win would be icing on the cake.
“She’s a Group 2 winner already so she’s well and truly paid for herself in terms of inherent value through black type and Group racing,’’ he said.
