Baker Confident Sprinter's Dynamic Form Can Continue

By Ray Hickson

Trainer Bjorn Baker can’t put his finger on exactly what has sparked Dynamic Impact this preparation but isn’t about to go looking gift horses in the mouth as he chases a hat-trick at Randwick on Saturday.

It was only back on Anzac Day that the gelding was scrambling home to win a Class 1 at Bathurst but his three subsequent wins have come in town and with increasing authority.

Baker said the four-year-old, who has now won five of his 13 starts, is holding his form well at home and can only be confident he will produce again in the Quayclean Handicap (1400m).

“He’s definitely continued to improve. He’s got bigger and stronger and he has a lovely attitude which has really helped him,’’ Baker said.

“It’s fallen into place with him. His work on Tuesday was good, he’s a lovely laid back customer.”

Dynamic Impact, $4.80 with TAB on Friday, has a slightly awkward barrier to overcome but Baker said he’s had plenty of experience on that front of late and will head into the race with an open mind tactically.

It didn't trouble him when running down Zoushack at Rosehill on October 30 nor when coasting home at Kembla Grange three weeks ago.

For the third time this preparation the gelding contests the last race and that can have its advantages when it comes to working out the right course to chart.

“He’s in really good order, he has a tricky gate but he hasn’t drawn too well in his previous two wins either,’’ he said.

“We’ll see how the race day pans out to decide on how we handle it. He’s pretty genuine regardless of what track he gets on, I’d love to see him on a decent track but we’re unlikely to get that.”

Baker is forecasting an improved second-up showing from Edison in the Listed $140,000 Fujitsu General Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) as he warms up for next month’s Magic Millions.

The five-year-old only beat two home behind Vulpine two weeks ago and the Warwick Farm trainer says he has plenty in his favour to run well.

“I thought it was a good run first-up, he got held up late when he was starting to make ground,’’ he said.

“The 1200m at Randwick will suit much better than 1100m at Rosehill and he has a better gate so he probably doesn’t have to get as far off them.

“He gets into the race with no weight, I’m confident he can run a good race.”

Among Baker’s large Randwick team are a couple of roughies he can see running above market expectations.

Stayer Fun Fact is a $101 chance in the Group 2 $750,000 The Agency Villiers Stakes (1600m) at his first appearance for six weeks, he’s not saying an upset win is on the cards but he’s looking for a pointer to head north.

“His last couple have been disappointing but he trialled well and his work on Tuesday was good so from that point of view we’re happy,’’ he said.

“He’s going to have to jump back to his best in a hurry. We will be positive, we won’t change anything, but it’s very much a stepping stone to his main target.”

And Parry Sound might be $41 in the Catanach’s Handicap (1600m) but he feels the six-year-old can also show that he’s heading in the right direction after finishing five lengths behind Steely when resuming.

“I think he is going very well, second-up at a mile at Randwick suits a lot better. I’m confident he can run a race,’’ he said.
