What You Missed: Royal Randwick

By Brad Gray At Royal Randwick The wash up from the defeats of Tactical Advantage, Stonebrook and Redouble, Winx makes history and Lizzie Jelfs gives punters a horse to follow. Don’t Sack Tactical Advantage Boom sprinter Tactical Advantage resumed under the care of Joe Pride at Randwick and although his run looked a pass mark, Glyn Schofield has warned punters to be very forgiving. “I’ve always thought that he is not on his best on wet ground and today proved that. He obviously had a big weight but he produced, got a split and went to quicken but he got stuck in the ground,” Schofield explained. “His best form is over 1200m and as he was getting into his preparation last time in he was probably looking for seven (furlongs) as well. He was resuming today and Joe is learning about him too. “If he strikes a dry track next time we’ll see a different horse. Don’t sack him!”

Stonebrook Wants Further Stonebrook lost his unbeaten tag when he was gunned down by Passage Of Time but Adam Hieronymus hasn’t lost his faith the horse. The four-year-old showed brilliant early speed to take up his customary spot rolling along out in front to go down 0.2L at the finish. “I’d say he just wants a little bit further now,” Hieronymus said. “It was still a very good run and the winner had a pull in the weights.” Joe Pride, whose stable is firing at the moment, said winner Passage Of Time will now head to Hawkesbury for the $150,000 Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) on November 9. Winx Makes History “Humidor gave us a hell of a fight.” Too right Chris Waller. The mighty mare Winx made it 22 wins straight in taking out her third Cox Plate and cemented herself as one of the best horses we’ve ever seen. “We are in the presence of greatness,” Hugh Bowman gushed after the race. “She will be recognised as one of the greatest horses to have graced the Australian turf and to be a part of her career I can’t explain how much that means. I’m lost for words. She has just made history.” I still got chills watching Winx from the Randwick press room. And she broke her own Moonee Valley track record as well. Champion. Jelfs Lending A Hand To Punters Cast your mind back three weeks ago and in this very column Sky Racing’s mounting yard expert Lizzie Jelfs singled out Firsthand as the pick of the entire Randwick meeting to follow. “He still had a lot of improvement in his coat to come. He has filled out as a horse and matured and will improve plenty from today. Look for him second up,” Jelfs said at the time. The Hawkes-trained five-year-old was wayward in the straight but got the verdict in a photo finish from In Excess. “To the horses credit he dug deep. He hit a flat spot at the furlong but it was a good win,” rider Blake McDougal reported post race. So let’s see if Lizzie can do it again now… Tactical Advantage will take plenty of benefit from his first up outing and is the galloper Jelfs singled out this time to follow with confidence when he steps out next.

Redouble and Damian Browne Punters steamed into Redouble (again!) and after he bottomed out to run a head-scratching last, it was evident that something was very wrong. Turns out the four-year-old pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia. Speaking to Jason Collett after the race he said he “was on empty” a long way from home. Easier said than done but best forget the run when assessing his chances next time out. Meanwhile, Damien Browne was stood down from his last two rides due to an injury. The veteran hoop said he heard a click when riding out High Mist to the finish before suffering soreness down the right side of his neck. He certainly looked in no state to ride leaving Randwick.
