With 11 metropolitan meetings still to be run in New South Wales, Chris Waller has surpassed his 2015-16 tally of 169 winners. It was the win of five-year-old stayer Mutarakem at Canterbury Park, on the quick turnaround from Saturday at Rosehill Gardens, which saw Waller’s metro winners tick over to 170 for the 2017/18 season.
Waller’s training career is showered with achievements but this season isn’t one he’ll be forgetting in a hurry having been inducted into two Racing Hall Of Fames (Australian and New Zealand), guided Winx through another unbeaten campaign and now, breaking his own training record.

It was fitting that Hugh Bowman, having returned from suspension and a short stint in Japan, was the one to ride Mutarakem and Bowman is better placed than most to champion Waller’s accomplishments.
“He has got great systems in place which he has developed over a period of time and to me, it comes as no surprise that he broke (his own) record because he is so professional and so thorough in everything that he does,” said Bowman.
“It’s great to have the support of the stable. It’s a privilege to be riding so much for him and it’s a great achievement, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did it again next year.”
Of Waller’s 170 metro winners, seven of them were Group Ones, while his prize money just for NSW metro alone is creeping, incredibly, towards the $20 million mark.

“I’ve just got to say straight off, thanks to all of my staff and all they do for these horses week in and week out,” Waller said.
“(Mutarakem) is a good example. He raced on Saturday and gets plenty of looking after at home. I turn up at the races and get presented with these beautiful horses from owners.
“It is a privilege for me to be at the helm and whether it’s a midweeker at Canterbury or a big Group One race we still get the same kick out it, even this far into the season.”
With 11 city meetings remaining in 2017-18, how many Sydney winners will champion trainer Chris Waller train by the end of the season?
Mutarakem handed him his 170th at Canterbury on Wednesday.
