Seahampton has won back the confidence of trainer Chris Waller and now the champion trainer is looking to another talented three-year-old in Kaonic to regain favour at Randwick on Saturday.

Both horses were earmarked as well above average by Waller early in the season but for one reason or another didn’t step up as expected.

Two weeks ago Seahampton put her ability on show with a booming win at Randwick.

While Kaonic doesn’t carry the weight of expectation for a first-up win in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1400m) Waller is forecasting a ‘back in business’ run similar to that produced by stablemate Paret last weekend.

“He's the same type of horse as Paret, it was good to see him finish off the other day and I'd say Kaonic is ready to do the same,’’ Waller said.

“He disappointed us last preparation. He was one of our Randwick Guineas horses at the end of the summer and he didn't come back as well as expected.

“He starts fresh. He has the talent, he just has to bring it to the races now.’’

Kaonic was one of the favourites for the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day last year but was scratched with an elevated temperature.

In four runs in the autumn he only managed a second placing in a benchmark race, though was only beaten three lengths in the Randwick Guineas before failing in the Rosehill Guineas.

Waller warned not to pay too much attention to the colt’s barrier trial performance, where he ran sixth at Randwick last Friday, and TAB had him rated $9.50 on Thursday.

“I was slightly disappointed with the trial but I can see beyond it,’’ he said.

“The last 100m was solid, he was slowly away, and I think trials can sometimes mislead you. The trial aside I'm very happy with him going to Saturday.’’

Seahampton will be out to repeat her win over the Randwick 1400m when she takes on older horses in the ATC Owner Benefits Card Handicap and Waller is excited to see what she can do on a good surface.

Punters Intel showed the filly ran the fastest last 600m of her race on July 7 in 35.79 and the best last 200m in 12.13 and she had the form confirmed with Island Missile, who ran the second best 600m and 200m, winning on Wednesday.

“She's come through it very well and that was a real confidence boost for her,’’ Waller said.

“She's back on track. Her work over the last seven days on good ground has been very good so I think you'll see a good performance.

“We identified she had talent some six months but she had a setback which was frustrating because we saw horses like Youngstar and Unforgotten progress to a high level and she was showing us the same ability.’’

TAB opened Seahampton favourite at $2.90 and she’d eased slightly to $3.10 on Thursday.
