Former popular jockey and trainer, Michael Hood, 63, has passed away over the weekend.
Michael was a talented apprentice in the mid-70s, outriding his claim around the Provincial and Country circuits. He also outrode his 3kg in the city.
“Michael was apprenticed to Dad (Mick Hood) and rode over 15 winners in town,” said Michael’s younger brother, Stephen.
“I reckon he rode about 120 winners all up but eventually had to give up riding due to increasing weight.
“Michael was foreman for his former wife Kim (now Waugh) before taking out his own licence.
“He was a good horseman and trained some decent horses including Cross Street (dual city winner), Stolen River (six city wins) and Reasons (ran in an AJC Derby at Randwick).
“I remember Dad and I had a horse called Seinfeld who was ridden by Lenny Beasley and two Saturdays in a row at Rosehill, Michael knocked us out with Reasons when ridden by John Marshall.
“Michael has been battling illness for many years and died peacefully on Saturday night. We will be having a funeral service for him up here in Brisbane next Monday.”
