Racing NSW has been advised of the passing last night of former country trainer Mr Gary Joseph Cooper from illness.
Mr Cooper was a leading Warren trainer for many years and handled several top country gallopers including Perky Miss which Ron Quinton rode to victory in Sydney.
Saltillo was Gary's first good horse when he was in his 20s, winning open class races in the city.
He formed a formidable partnership with jockey (later steward) Ned Dougherty, bringing off many betting plunges.
In September '66 they combined to win the City of Dubbo Cup when Dubbo was declared a city. The race was the first galloping event to be televised live throughout Australia on TV.
The broadcast was on ABC TV as part of the City of Dubbo celebrations, with Ken Howard broadcasting on course and on the radio.
The Webb/Robertson-owned Pinkenbah won the race in green, dark blue stripes - similar colours to TJ Smith's except the horse carried a green cap.
A service will be held for Mr Cooper commencing at 1:30pm at the West Chapel, Woronora Memorial Park, Sutherland on Wednesday, 4th October 2017.
