Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of former Canterbury and Warwick Farm trainer Dave Mills who died on 10 June 2024.
The late Mr Dave Mills
Dave Mills, 87, had just the one horse in work, Satirical Magic, when he retired in May 2018.
Satirical Magic won eight races including three in succession at Canterbury in November 2017 and January 2018 and that horse was his final runner when unplaced at Rosehill in May 2018.
Dave also prepared stayer Darragh who won 11 races for the stable including two at Warwick Farm and one at Randwick.
“I’ve got one in work, that’s him – that’s my full team,” Mills said after Satirical Magic had won at Canterbury.
Rosehill trainer Lee Curtis spent a lot of time with Dave Mills learning the ropes.
“Dave was a tremendous help; he was an old-style horseman who taught me the finer points,” Curtis told John Tapp.
“It was Dave who suggested I apply for my own licence. He said there was nothing else he could show me and that experience would now be the best teacher.”
Mr Mills won 89 races and had 187 placegetters with Nowra his best racecourse where he landed 12 wins.
