Track Manager Confident Of Wyong Update (Thursday)

By Grahame Timbrell

Wyong’s track manager, Phil Robinson, is confident there will be another track upgrade before Thursday’s meeting and is even hoping it may get into the soft range before the first race. The track was upgraded late on Tuesday afternoon from a heavy 9 to a heavy 8 and Robinson said it was continuing to improve.

“The track is draining well, improving all the time and we have only had the occasional shower,” Robinson said. “If it continues at this rate there will be another upgrade and I am even hoping that we might get into the soft range. The forecast for Thursday is for a nice day which will help us even further.”

One horse that is going to appreciate the conditions is former New Zealand-trained sprinter Bombarding which makes his debut for new trainer, David Pfieffer, in the Ladies Day Sunday August 26 Benchmark 60 (1100m).

“He is owned by a new group of clients and I am sure the horse is going to feel right at home in in those conditions,” Pfieffer said.

“He has won in the soft and been placed in the heavy and he has first-up form. He is a nice, energetic sort of horse and has continued to improve since I put him into work.

“His two trials were good and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do. Often a change of environment can switch these young horses back on and from what he has shown us so far I think he is going to win a few races in Australia.”

Bombarding comes to Australia as the winner of only one race from 16 starts but he has been placed another six times, often against good company. One of those placings was a close second in Listed company last season as a two-year-old.

Interestingly, the three-year-old is one of only two rides Corey Brown has before he heads to Brisbane where he rides Champagne Cuddles for Bjorn Baker in the Stradbroke Handicap. Brown rode Bombarding in his second trial when he ran a close third to Redouble after being up on the speed the whole way.

Brown’s other ride is on Diamond Star Halo for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in the Wyong Race Saturday July 14 Class One and Maiden (2100m). The John Sargent trained topweight Only Tiger is the early favourite for that race after a win at Newcastle and a succession of placings on other Provincial tracks. He is the first of four good rides McDonald has at the meeting.
