A large contingent of northern hemisphere horses targeting a number of Group and feature races arrive in Sydney this weekend as part of the $87 million Sydney Everest Carnival.
Ten horses from the UK will settle at Canterbury Park for overseas and leading Sydney trainers ahead of races such as the inaugural $5 million King Charles III Stakes at Royal Randwick and $10 million James Squire Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens.
Amongst the UK group are Light Infantry now in the care of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and Buckeroo for leading UK trainer Aidan O’Brien, who are preparing for the $5 million King Charles III Stakes at Royal Randwick on TAB Everest Day, 14 October.
The $10 million James Squire Golden Eagle continues to attract a number of contenders with former British trained New Endeavour, Zoology, Age of Kings and Galeron all heading towards the race, as well as Coin Toss arriving from Singapore.
These arrivals come ahead of the anticipated landing of the first Japanese runner at a Sydney Spring Carnival in Obamburumai.
The Japanese four-year-old trained by Keiji Yoshimura and to be ridden by world-renowned jockey Yutaka Take is heading to Sydney for the $10 million James squire Golden Eagle, in which he is a $6 TAB Fixed Odds equal second favourite.
Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering James Ross said the horses coming to Sydney for the spring will compete across the entire program.
“We are delighted to see so many quality horses with recent Group form heading to Sydney to compete in a variety of races right across the Sydney Everest Carnival,’’ Mr Ross said.
“To have horses of the quality of Light Infantry and Buckeroo aiming for the King Charles III Stakes is a significant endorsement of the race and prizemoney on offer from Racing NSW and the ATC.
“It’s also pleasing to again see a number of the horses who are expected to remain with our leading trainers to continue their racing careers here beyond Spring."
