Talented Gelding Eyes Winning Double At Hawkesbury (Tuesday)

By John Schell

Wyong-based trainer Kim Waugh will attempt to win successive Hawkesbury events at the track on Tuesday with Northern Eyes ($4.40 on TAB) when it contests the Lander Toyota Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1300m) with Jay Ford in the saddle.

Formerly trained by Chris Waller, Northern Eyes is a well-bred gelding by Zoustar out of city and Listed-winning mare Sexy Eyes.

He debuted for the Waugh stable with a maiden victory on August 1, and Waugh thinks he can go on with the job.

“He was dominant winning at Hawkesbury at his second race start for me,” said Waugh.

“He had very good form when he was with Chris and he won a trial for me before he ran fourth a Wyong when he debuted for our stable.

“He went on with the job after that when he bolted in at Hawkesbury when he raced on the pace.

"He should do the same again on Tuesday and if he can run up to the latest effort, he should be very hard to hold out again.”

Ford will also combine with Moore when he rides Mogul Monarch ($3 favourite) in the Blakes Marine Maiden Handicap (1100m).

“Mogul Monarch had two starts in April and ran well when second on debut at Gosford,” said Waugh.

“He ran into a handy one [Captain Furai] at Newcastle after that and wasn’t beaten too far when he ran seventh and we gave him a break after that.

“He’s looked good winning both of his trials leading into this resuming run and he has a good gate to jump from with Jay on him after being on in the latest trial.”

Waugh has two runners in the final event of the day at Hawkesbury with last start Wyong winner Doraskaya (Benjamin Osmond-$8.50) to be joined by stablemate Community (Rory Hutchings-$21).

“Doraskaya was racing in good form earlier in the year when winning at Gosford after a second at Wyong,” said Waugh.

“She resumed this campaign with a pleasing third at Wyong and followed that up with a win at Wyong when she ran home well. The extra 200m looks in her favour and I expect her to run well again.”
