Former Sydney Swans AFL star Nick Davis kicked a big early goal to set up a handy lead in the 2017 TAB Champion Tipster competition after a thrilling Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Davis, who tipped $38.80 winner Free Standing in the Newhaven Park Country Championships Final, finished the day with a balance of $566 – more than double his nearest rival.
Defending champion Adam Pengilly, from Fairfax’s racing stables, is sitting second on a balance of $201 after producing a winner (Invader in the Inglis Sires’) and long-shot third placegetter Sense Of Occasion ($9.20 place) in The Star Doncaster Mile.
Gary Crispe (Racing & Sports) is third on $152, Russell Barwick (Fox Sports) is fourth on $148 and Erin Holland, an ATC ambassador making her debut in the tipster challenge, is fifth on $115 after a consistent day that yielded her three placings: Summer Passage, English and Happy Clapper.
Many of the tipsters who are yet to open their account will be hoping for a big comeback on Day 2 of The Championships next Saturday with a huge program including the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes featuring mighty mare Winx.
Aside from the title of 2017 TAB Champion Tipster, the winner will raise money for his or her nominated charity with TAB donating $5000 to the winner's charitable organisation.
The TAB has $10 each way on selections of each contestant to determine the winner over The Championships races over two days.
This year’s TAB Champion Tipster will join esteemed company and follow in the footsteps of past winners Adam Pengilly (2016), Ron Dufficy (2015) and Brent Zerafa (2014).
