Strong Nominations For $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper

The Australian Turf Club has received 383 second nominations for the Group 1 $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper – the world’s richest race for two year olds to be run at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 20 March.

Leading stables from across Australia have nominated 210 colts and geldings and 173 fillies for the race every owner first dreams of winning.

The total number of second nominations is amongst the highest in a decade and well up on last year’s 328 second nominations.

Stables and trainers with the highest number of nominations include James Cummings for Godolphin (39), Hawkes Racing (31), Snowden Racing (17), Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott (17), Richard and Michael Freedman (16), Ciaron Maher Racing (14) and Mark Newnham (12).

Sires with the highest number of second entries are I Am Invincible (28), Snitzel (27), Not A Single Doubt (22), Capitalist (21), Sebring (16), Shalaa and Written Tycoon (14) and Exceed and Excel (13).

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering James Ross said the Longines Golden Slipper remained the race that shapes Australian racing and breeding in Australia.

“We are very pleased with such a strong list of second acceptances which are up almost 20 per cent on the previous year,’’ Mr Ross said.

“There also appears to be some great depth in this year’s crop including Breeders Plate and Magic Millions winner Shaquero, Golden Gift winner Sneaky Five, Gimcrack Stakes winner Enthaar and Inglis Nursery Winner Acrobat some examples.

“It certainly sets the scene for an exciting series of pathway races over the coming months towards the ultimate prize in two year old racing at Rosehill Gardens.”
