Tough galloper Steely has run his last race with connections deciding to retire the well-performed horse.
The rising eight-year-old raced on 44 occasions for nine wins and nine placings earning just over $712,000 in prizemoney, having been trained by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou.
Although he didn't crack it for a Stakes win, he was placed in the Listed-Winter Challenge behind Barbie's Fox and Hosier at Rosehill Gardens last July.
He was also placed in a Goulburn Cup (beaten a nose) and the Little Dance at Royal Randwick.
Steely was a versatile performer winning from 1300m to 1800m and won races at six different courses: Hawkesbury, Kembla Grange, Newcastle, Eagle Farm, Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick.
His final start was at Eagle Farm when down the track behind A Deel of Humour last Saturday (20th July).
The popularity of the gelding was such that he has had his own 'Steely' Facebook page for the past five years with 306 followers.
The following was posted by 'Steely': "Sadly I have decided to retire as I am not able to perform to my best even though I still look good.
"I'd like to thank Gerald, Sterling and Rachel and all the staff at Ryan & Alexiou Racing for looking after me.
"And to my owners - thank you and to all my followers thank you ... what a ride! Cheers, Steely"
Connections are keen to have him be retrained before commencing a new career in the equestrian arena.
