Snowden Senses Timing's Right For Englishman To Deliver

By Ray Hickson

It’s all about timing when it comes to getting the best out of The Englishman and trainer Peter Snowden is confident there’s an opportunity to notch a third career win at Randwick on Saturday.

The Englishman signalled he’s close to a breakthrough with a game second behind Don Diego De Vega two weeks ago over the same course as he’ll contest in the ATC Thank You Owners Handicap (1800m).

Snowden said while the four-year-old is no star it showed in that last start placing that he can be effective at this level with a light weight.

“He had a good weight pull in the race, he has a similar weight on Saturday and I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t run well,’’ Snowden said.

“His right trip is between a mile and 1800m and he’s better on good ground. He was ridden the right way the other day and if he’s ridden similarly he’ll find his real form.

“The horse is racing well, he probably has limited ability it’s fair to say but if things go right he can win. It’s the right race for him and he’ll be hard to beat.”

The gelding’s most recent win came over 1800m at Rosehill back in November and Snowden said there’s certainly less depth on Saturday than that The Enlishman, $5 with TAB on Friday, met earlier this month.

The Englishman runs second at Randwick on July 13

“There’s a lot of horses in the same barrel as he is so he’s got to bring his A game to the races,’’ Snowden said.

“There’s no reason he won’t because his work has been so good.”

Sakima will be racing for a shot at stakes company in the Ranvet Handicap (1100m) with Snowden saying if she’s in the finish she’d be more than deserving of a bar raise.

The filly defied a big betting drift to score first-up on the Kensington track on July 17, sweeping home from near the tail, and the trainer said it was a win that had some authority about it.

On that day stablemate Twirling was heavily backed and while Snowden said while that filly had an excuse, when she hit a joint on jumping and didn’t stretch out, take nothing away from Sakima.

“She meets a couple of handy ones but it will give a bit of a heads up where she sits in the pecking order,’’ he said.

“If she was to run well we’d think about the Quezette in a few weeks time, if she runs down the track I’ll stick her around her own class.

“I think she is a bit better than average, it was a good strong win last start, and if she can run top two or three we might take her to Melbourne.”

Peter Snowden on Kadall (race 8): “He’s a horse that keeps getting better with racing and though he’s drawn wide it’s the right race. He’s a consistent horse, the 2kg off helps and there’s no reason why he can’t run well again.”

On Sir Artie (race 10): “He’s going really well, he runs well fresh but he’s better second and third up. We might have to run him and hope for luck knowing he’ll be better next start. If there’s four or five out (on Saturday morning) I’d definitely run but as it stands I’m a bit skeptical about running.”
