Snowden Searching For Sweet Breakthrough With Memo

By Ray Hickson

Over $600,000 in prizemoney with four placings from as many starts says Memo is already doing a great job for her owners but trainer Peter Snowden would like to see her get a win on the board at Randwick on Saturday.

Memo hasn’t raced since she finished second in the Magic Millions Classic on January 17 and Snowden said she’s returned from a short break in great order.

A win in the Group 2 $300,000 TAB Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) is needed to gain a start in the Golden Slipper, given a lot of her prizemoney isn’t eligible, but there’s no guarantee she’ll take her place if she does earn the exemption.

“She’s been running very well without winning, hopefully she’s not one of those non-winners and she can break that duck on Saturday in a pretty strong race,’’ Snowden.

“You can make a case she was a bit unlucky a couple of times but still it’d be good to win one sooner rather than later.

“She has to win one of these to force her way into the field.

“Even if she won on Saturday there’s no guarantee I’d take her to the Slipper. She could run in the Percy Sykes, just that next rung down.”

Memo, $7 with TAB on Thursday, spent nine days in the paddock after her Gold Coast trip and warmed up with a second in a 900m trial at Rosehill on February 18.

Snowden said her work since that trial has been on point and feels if things go her way she has the ability to win and even be competitive in a Slipper, if she went that way, in an open year.

“She’s honest, she’s genuine, I haven’t seen a Group 1 two-year-old yet this year,’’ he said.

“There’s been nothing stand out and a different winner every week.

"In my mind, with the better ones I’ve had, she’s nowhere near a Capitalist or a Sepoy but she’s capable of winning one of these races.

“She does try hard and when they are like that you never know what they can win, with luck on your side you might be good enough to win a good race.”

Quietly Arrogant is also back from a Magic Millions campaign and will tackle the Group 2 $300,000 Catanach’s Jewellers Skyline Stakes (1200m) with James McDonald in the saddle.

Snowden said his effort in that race was sound and if McDonald can get the colt to settle and not concede a big start he could put himself in the frame.

“He’s run some good races, his win was very good at the Sunshine Coast and his run in the Magic Millions was good,’’ he said.

“He’s a better horse when he’s ridden quiet, he’s got a good turn of foot. You saw it at the Gold Coast and in the trial the other day.

“He’ll be midfield, not last, from the draw and if he’s midfield he’s half a chance to run well.”

Peter Snowden on Tashi (race 6): “I think she’s in the right race, she hasn’t run at seven furlongs for a while but under the set weights conditions she’s very well weighted. Take out the top one and it looks a pretty even sort of field. She’s a good chance if she can run the seven furlongs.”

On Ka Bling (Race 9): “He’s struck a pretty hard race so he’s got his work cut out for him. I think he’s going well but he’s not racing well at the moment, it might be a case of finding the right race for him.”
