Ryan Relies On Money To Chase Dance Double

By Ray Hickson

Attractable won't be back to defend his crown in Tuesday’s Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick so trainer Sara Ryan is relying on stablemate Money From The Sky to fly the flag for her in the $3 million feature.

Ryan scored the biggest win of her short training career when Attractable won the Big Dance but bone bruising to a fetlock has seen him miss the spring and any chance to qualify.

Money From The Sky earned his ticket by winning the Bathurst Cup in September and Ryan said he’s a talent if his mind is on the job.

“He’s not as honest as Attractable but when he’s on, he’s on,’’ she said.

“The goal was to have two in the race, we were hoping to have Matcha Latte there but he had a setback. He was going into the Wild Card but he didn’t make it there so we’ve put him away and we’ll try for the Doncaster.”

The flashy gelding has raced once since the Bathurst Cup, Ryan said it was a run he definitely had to have to be ready for the Big Dance.

He was an $81 chance on Sunday with TAB in the feature after running 11th behind Willaidow in a 1400m Benchmark 88 at Randwick on Everest Day where he posted the race’s second fastest last 600m of 34.73 (Punter’s Intelligence).

“The plan was to freshen him so I put him out in the paddock for a week, we had that trial and a start at 1400m,’’ Ryan said.

“The result doesn’t look that good but the times were, for him, in his last 600m. But he needed that run, he had a good blow after that which surprised me because I thought he was fitter than that.

“We needed to tune some things with him and get him a bit fitter but going in I’m happy with him, he’s really glowing.”

Group 1 winning jockey Reece Jones partnered Money From The Sky in his last piece of work ahead of the Big Dance and Ryan said she’s happy the gelding has drawn out rather than in.

He has a backmarker’s pattern and she said the one place she doesn’t want the six-year-old is cramped in a pocket.

“I spend the first half of his races not watching because I don’t want to know how far back he is,’’ she said.

“He’s one of those horses that needs clean air, once you turn him on he’s going to go and it’s how much of a job he’s left for himself.

“He’s every part of 17 hands this horse, he’s enormous, and I hate him on the fence being crammed where he can’t have a stride he needs to have. I think that’s why he gets himself so far back.

“At Bathurst there was a horse behind him, which he doesn’t have often, so I’m hopeful he can have a couple behind him.”

It was a whirlwind rise for Ryan 12 months ago, having taken over as trainer for Domeland based on the Central Coast, and Attractable put her on the map.

She said that win was a boost in many ways.

“I was still very new on the scene last year, I hadn’t done a full year of training, so it was quite an achievement for the whole team,’’ she said.

“You get confidence in your system and the people around you, you know everything is working correctly.”

Meanwhile, Ryan said Attractable will be given all the time he needs to recover from his injury, which is similar to the one that saw Group 1 winner Celestial Legend’s spring come to an end.

“The only way to get over it is time. You have to put them in the paddock and not look at them for a while,’’ she said.
