Royal Randwick Winners - Tips For Saturday 27th May

By Mark Brassel

Selections and insights for Royal Randwick - there are winners to be found in the nine races and let's hope we can back up Brad Gray's haul of six winners on top last week!

At the moment the track is a Soft 6 but with pleasant weather and no rain predicted, that could well be upgraded by post time.

Race 1 - 11:10AM SEVEN NEWS PLATE (1400M)

Allied Power (6) was last (of 7) approaching the home bend at Gosford (1100m) in only his fourth start but rounded them up quickly to cruise away for a two-length win. He appeals at the $9.50 with TAB fixed odds and it should be noted Pymble (finished 5th) then came out and won at Newcastle last Saturday. Easy Go Easy Win (8) has been crunched from $6 into $4.60 and should won at Warwick Farm (1300m) last time, when his rider had to check around heels at the 200m to find clear running.

Other chances: Looks a strong 2yo race - Kementari (9) ran about when runner-up to stablemate Malahat at Canterbury (1200m) on debut and has firmed from $8 to $6 so should improve, while Heliosphere (11) has been kept firm at $11 at his first start and finished strongly for 3rd in a recent Randwick trial.

How to play it: Allied Power each-way at the odds; alternatively box the quinella 6-8-9-11.

Watch Allied Power swallow them up at Gosford

Race 2 - 11:45AM TONY SLEIMAN MEMORIAL TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1100M)

The last time Love's a Hassle (11) drew a decent barrier it received a smother then dashed home to score at Mudgee (1100m) three starts back. The past two starts the chestnut has drawn badly at Hawkesbury (1100m) and Rosehill (1200m) and has been trapped wide, running out of puff late. On Saturday the gelding has drawn barrier four and should get a cosy run to have the last shot at them. Prepared to snap up the $13 on TAB fixed odds. Suncraze (9) has been solidly backed from $3.50 to $2.60 and is a deserved favourite. Came from a mile back out wide to finish an excellent 2nd to Cadogan (who received a lucky inside run) during the Scone Cup Carnival. Third horse Ghostly franked the form by winning at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Other chances: The Matt Dale-trained Clipper (10) - $4.60 to $3.80 was placed in two Highway races at Randwick during the summer and resumes here, but Dale is a genius winning seven of the Highways to date. Portatorio (2) - $17 was having his second run from a break and had to change course at the 220m when runner-up at Port Macquarie and will derive benefit from the run.

How to play it: Box the quinella 2-9-10-11.

Race 3 - 12:25PM EML HANDICAP (2000M)

No wonder interstate visitor Mandalay Bay (9) has firmed from $15 to $9.50 here, having been luckless at his past two runs and should have won both. Carried 60kg and took a while to wind up before flying home from the back for a half neck 2nd at Geelong (1300m) then again came from last (of 11) and launched late when a close 4th (btn half a head) at Sandown-Hillside (1600m). With even luck will be motoring late. Hard to knock another well-backed commodity Prometheus (10) - $8 to $5 who put in an amazing performance to win at Kembla (1600m) last start after being three-wide throughout, then having the temerity to kick away at the 200m and win by nearly five lengths.

Other chances: Chris Waller has five runners and each have sound prospects: Sizzling Bullet (1) - $4.20, Wu Gok (2) - $7, Tumultuous (5) - $11, Monasterio (8) - $11 and Cross Stitch (12) - $11.

How to play it: Take a trifecta 9 & 10 to win and throw in Waller's team for 2nd and 3rd - 9+10/1-2-5-8-9-10-12.

See Prometheus make a mess of them at Kembla Grange

Race 4 - 1:05PM MARK TAYLOR OUTREACH PROGRAM HANDICAP (1600M)

The last run of So Willie (2) - $6 in to $5 was a ripper, coming from 13th spot at the home turn and rattling home for 4th (btn 3 lens) to stablemate Invinzabeel at Rosehill last Saturday. The gelding had previously won races at Warwick Farm (1600m) & Hawkesbury (1500m) so there's no doubting how well this chap is going at the moment. At a bit of odds It's a Shamozzle (5) has to be given a chance especially at $15. The 6yo won races at Scone (1300m) and Tamworth (1200m) before coming from a long way back for a good 6th (1.7 lens) in the Tamworth Cup (1400m). Forget his last start in the Scone Cup (1600m) where he ran into several dead-ends down the straight.

Other chances: Waller stablemate Chandana (10) continues to race well and cannot be overlooked and Kingsguard (8) - $8 performed creditably first-up and will strip much fitter for this.

How to play it: There's value in backing both So Willie and It's a Shamozzle at the odds.

So Willie steams home from near last on the turn at Rosehill

Race 5 - 1:45PM WILSON ASSET MANAGEMENT HANDICAP (1400M)

The most open race of the day and a dozen chances. The run of Brulee (2) at Scone (1300m) was a bottler, being strung up halfway down the straight and only seeing daylight 150m from home where she absolutely motored to the post. Ran in Stakes races in Victoria last year so has class and also supporters for Randwick, firming from $11 into $9.50. Godolphin galloper Istria (5) - $8 showed tenacity to score at Newcastle (1400m) last start and is on an upward spiral.

Other chances: Siren's Fury (1) - $8 is an honest type and gets 3kg off for apprentice Brock Ryan, My True Love (4) - $6 was pushed wide but kept coming for a narrow defeat at Gosford (1100m) and Noire (7) - $6 is a progressive filly racing well this campaign.

How to play it: Go with a box tri: 2-5-1-4-7.

Brulee jumps out of the ground to finish 3rd at Scone

Race 6 - 2:20PM THE SPORTING CHANCE GOLFERS HANDICAP (1200M)

Hard to go part In Times of War (12) - $3.50. Has not finished further back than 2nd in six starts and it took a good one in Bonny O'Reilly to lower her colours last time at Rosehill (1100m). Was narrowly beaten by Sisken (10) - $4.60 the start before at Canterbury (1250m) and meets her 4kg better. Sisken has won her last three and her form will be enhanced if Brulee salutes in an earlier race.

Other chances: Nudierudie (1) - $9.50 won't have raced for three weeks since running in a Gold Coast Stakes race and can improve sharply while fresh and Il Mio Destino (4) - $17 makes her own luck near the front and is racing well.

How to play it: Standout quinella 12 from 10-1-4.

See Times Of War grabbed late by subsequent winner Bonny O'Reilly

Race 7 - 3:00PM FUJITSU AIR CONDITIONING MCKELL CUP (2400M)

Nothing more genuine than an in-form stayer and we've got to stick with Broadside (1) who is $3.40 into $2.80, and rightly so. Backing up after giving his rivals a galloping lesson at Rosehill (2000m) last Saturday and remains on the limit weight (53kg). Will lead or be thereabouts and they'll struggle to catch this fellow. Richard of Yorke (9) - $11 was fairly one-paced at Scone (2200m) but gets back to the 2400m here and had previously won over that trip at Randwick.

Other chances: Allergic (1) - $3.40 finished strongly at his first run for five weeks when 2nd to Top of My List at Rosehill (2000m) last start and has claims, with Multitude (10) - $11 a consistent stayer who comes off the back of a last start Warwick Farm win (2200m).

How to play it: Bet up on Broadside; his rivals will struggle to get to him in the stretch.

Watch Broadside outgun his rivals at Rosehill last weekend

Race 8 - 3:40PM SPORTING CHANCE CANCER FOUNDATION HANDICAP (1100M)

Last start ultra-consistent mare Machinegun Jubs (12) - $4.60 came from last (of 15) at the home turn to dead-heat for 2nd to Bonny O'Reilly at Rosehill (1100m) in an excellent effort. The only blot to her copybook record (12/5-3-1) was in the Provincial Championships Final in March but she showed she is back on track last time out. Upscale (13) - $6 won three city races last campaign and was not knocked about in a recent Wyong trial (1000m). Expect a big effort fresh.

Other chances: Godolphin galloper Badajoz (11) - $3.50 has strong form last preparation and has been primed with two impressive trial wins. The rails draw is also an advantage. Le Cordon Bleu (4) - $11 disappointed first-up at Scone but invariably pulls out a big one when you least expect it.

How to play it: Box the quinella 12-13-11-4.

Machinegun Jubs flashes home out wide for 2nd at Rosehill

Race 9 - 4:20PM ONE SOLUTIONS HANDICAP (1400M)

He is becoming a costly conveyance but prepared to give Ruthless Agent (13) one more chance at the odds ($15). Showed plenty of ability winning his first three starts and returned from a let-up with a fast-finishing 2nd to Wanna Get a What at Hawkesbury (1100m). Last time failed in a Stakes race at Doomben so should find this more to his liking from barrier 3. Coolcraft (4) - $8 caught the eye finishing hard for 3rd to Bratislava at Canterbury (1250m) at his second run back and is an improver.

Other chances: High Mist (2) - $7 came from well back first-up for a good 7th (btn just 1.5 lens) at Warwick Farm Farm (1400m) and gets the benefit of Blaike McDougall's 3kg claim, while Magical Stance (1) - $26 is resuming but invariably runs a big race fresh.

How to play it: Nice race to wind up the day, take the box quinella 13-4-2-1.
