Royal Randwick Lights Up With Stars As Sydney Prepares For A Bumper Autumn

Royal Randwick hosts another huge day of Group 1 racing this Saturday, showcasing several of the nation’s highest rated horses along with two key pathway races to Sydney’s iconic $5 million Longines Golden Slipper.

The Group 1 $1 million Mostyn Copper Randwick Guineas – the first leg of Sydney’s prestigious Triple Crown for three-year-olds – and the Group 1 $500,000 Furphy Canterbury Stakes are feature events on Saturday’s ten-race card.

The world’s highest rated sprinter and defending TAB Everest champion Nature Strip again takes on his great rival Eduardo in the Group 2 $500,000 Hyland Race Colours Challenge Stakes.

And the Group 2 $300,000 Yarraman Park Reisling Stakes for the fillies and Group 2 $300,000 UNSW Todman Stakes (colts and geldings) see several horses high in TAB markets for the Group 1 $5 million Longines Golden Slipper look to further their claims for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering James Ross said Sydney’s world-famous Royal Randwick hosted this Saturday before the official start of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival at Rosehill Gardens on 12 March.

“Saturday’s meeting features world-class Group 1 racing on the eve of the six-week Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival where another 18 Group 1 races and $37 million in prizemoney will be won,’’ Mr Ross said.

“Along with Saturday’s Group 1 racing the clash between two of the world’s highest rated sprinters in Nature Strip and Eduardo shapes as one of several highlights.’’

Star Godolphin three-year-old Anamoe for trainer James Cummings and jockey James McDonald is a firm $1.90 TAB favourite in the Group 1 $1 million Mostyn Copper Randwick Guineas.

Jointly on the second line of TAB markets at $6 are Converge, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for jockey Tim Clark, and Hilal for Hawkes Racing and Sydney jockey newcomer William Pike.

In the Group 1 $500,000 Furphy Canterbury Stakes, the Richard and Michael Freedman trained Forbidden Love is a $3.10 TAB favourite for jockey Hugh Bowman ahead of Melbourne visitor Lighthouse ($4 TAB) for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and jockey James McDonald.

Peter and Paul Snowden, chasing their second Longines Golden Slipper as training partners, saddle up $2.10 TAB favourite Russian Conquest with Tommy Berry aboard in the Group 2 $300,000 Yarraman Park Reisling Stakes.

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace with jockey James McDonald combine with the second TAB favourite and first starter Greece ($3 TAB) as the filly aims to gain automatic entry into the Longines Golden Slipper.

In the Group 2 $300,000 UNSW Todman Stakes the Gary Portelli trained colt Sejardan with jockey Jason Collett is a $3 TAB favourite ahead of Psychiatrist ($3.70 TAB) for jockey Tim Clark and trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou.

The Royal Randwick track was rated a Heavy 10 on Thursday.

The Australian Turf Club’s popular Punters Club Challenge – supported by TAB – will again be held this Saturday on course at Royal Randwick to a sold-out event.

Groups of punters from across NSW will compete in the ninth event.

Sky Racing presenter and race caller Luke Marlow will host the day, with celebrity tipsters and industry insiders adding to the atmosphere as punters match their skills on the Royal Randwick card.

Punters will have another chance to book at the next event on TAB Epsom Day.
