Randwick Trial Report - Lots To Love About Waterhouse/Bott Filly

By Ray Hickson

It’s been a remarkable two-year-old season for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott winning 28 races so far and they’re not likely to be done yet after a couple of smart performances at Tuesday’s Randwick trials.

Capitalist filly Love And Light backed up what was an impressive first trial in late May with a runaway performance in smart time in a 1045m heat.

Jockey Regan Bayliss allowed the filly to be shaded in the early stages of the gallop by stablemate Taormina but by the time they reached the turn Love And Light was clearly in control.

She kicked clear early in the straight and while the runner-up pulled some late ground she clocked the fastest time for the six heats over the trip and you’d imagine she’s now ready to go to the races.

It’ll be interesting to see how both her and Taormina perform given they’ve been pitted against each other in both their trials.

Wasted Youth is also a filly, she’s out of a Group 3 winning daughter of 2010 Group 1 AJC Oaks winner Once Were Wild, and she was given a nice sound out in preparation for an upcoming debut.

Tim Clark took the I Am Invincible youngster to the lead and kept her running, without being asked any serious questions, to score by just over three lengths in a time less than half a length slower than Love And Light.

It was her second trial and a notable improvement on what was a handy first trial this prep.

Still on the Waterhouse/Bott yard, there was plenty to like about the performance of unraced three-year-old Howgoodareyou in her first trial since August.

The So You Think filly sat back near the tail of the field in the three wide line and after needing a little winding up she powered over the top to win by half a length.

While the time was fair and it’s hard to gauge what was behind her given there’s not a lot of form in the maiden trial it’s just the style of the win that said she has some ability.

Tazaral is an import from the Snowden yard who showed a glimpse in three starts in his first local prep in the late summer, finishing third in a Benchmark 88 at Randwick in February, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can lift with that seasoning campaign under the belt.

He chased home Group winning mare Electric Girl in a 1045m trial, run about a length slower than Love And Light’s trial, sliding home quite well under no duress from Kerrin McEvoy.

It was arguably a sharper trial than the one preceding his last prep so that bodes well for when he returns.

Sweet Ride has been a curious trialler in recent weeks.

The colt, a Group 3 winner of the San Domenico at the end of last winter and subsequently multiple Group placed in three more starts in the spring, strode to the lead under some urging from Jett Stanley before being picked up by the race fit Cotehele late in slow time.

He missed the autumn after trialling twice so must have had an issue and we'll wait and see where he bobs up in the coming weeks.
