Randwick Trial Report - Kitty Purring For Summer Return

By Ray Hickson

With form around a couple of the spring’s top class fillies from her only race start, all eyes will be on Kitty Chat when she resumes after another trial win at Randwick on Monday.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott three-year-old split Group 1 winner Joliestar and stakes winner Arctic Glamour in a Warwick Farm maiden back in June and started favourite against that duo.

In her 1050m heat she settled comfortably outside the leader and always travelled better. When asked to extend a bit late by Tim Clark she obliged and edged away for an easy win.

You’d imagine there’s a maiden with her name written on it in the next week or two.

The two-year-olds from the Waterhouse/Bott team continue to impress and Breeders’ Plate runner-up Straight Charge made it two trial wins from as many appearances this time in as he had the better of stablemate Trunk for the second time.

The colt was kept wide on the course in the 740m scamper while Trunk, who sweated up noticeably, stayed close to the inside and Straight Charge finished the better in the quickest time for the short heats.

Trunk is a Snitzel colt who is yet to race and while outpointed by his stablemate at the trials he clearly has ability and don’t be surprised if he runs well when he steps out.

Format is a royally bred Frankel colt out of former top mare Nechita and while he ran second in his 740m heat he’s a horse you’d like to see again. He settled handy and wide and once balanced up in the straight made good ground to fail narrowly.

It was a low key return by class filly Learning To Fly in a 740m open heat, her first appearance since losing the rider in the Golden Slipper.

Time To Boogie wins a Randwick trial on December 11

Annabeal Neasham flagged a slow build up to the races so it was no surprise to see her given a very easy time. She jumped well and raced handy then was restrained in the straight to run fifth, not much can be taken from the gallop so we’ll assess her again later.

It’ll likely be a strong heat with Time To Boogie, who is set to back up and resume at Randwick this Saturday, holding off Lavish Empire to win nicely with Kangaroo Court a close third.

Expect there should be wins over the summer from the likes of Ringdembells and Capital Heart, who both caught the eye in their respective trials as they ran into the placings.

Ringdembells, from the Snowden camp, ran a nice second to stablemate Sovereign Fund in a 1050m heat. She’s a Class 1 mare at present with a handy record and she found the line full of running and pulled nice ground off the winner.

Capital Heart, trained by John O’Shea, is also a Class 1 horse and hasn’t raced since finishing third at Warwick Farm back in October. He sailed home from well back in the field to the minor placing behind all the way winner Either Oar, who looked good, and Royal Tribute who did seem to battle in second place.

There were a couple of unraced trial winners who might have upside.

They are Shamrock Sally, a filly trained by Les Bridge who was having her second trial and clocked time comparable with the 1050m open heats, and Call Me Gorgeous from the David Pfieffer yard.

He’s a colt who was having his first trial and you’d have been rapt if he ran into a placing after he raced greenly around the bend but he showed plenty of purpose in winning narrowly over the 740m.
