Racing NSW Handicapper Comments - 2022 TAB Epsom Handicap

Weights – The TAB Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) - Saturday, 1st October 2022

A total of 99 nominations have been weighed for the 157th running of The TAB Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) to be staged at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 1st October 2022.

This year’s edition of the The TAB Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) will be run for $1.5 million with a 50.0kg minimum weight (48kg minimum for 3yos).

The honour of topweight this year has been given to three-time Group 1 winner, Zaaki (GB) [pictured left] with 60.0kg. Zaaki (GB) won the 2021 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), the 2021 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m), 2021 Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) and recently won the 2022 Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m)

Next in line on 58.5kg is I’m Thunderstruck (NZ), a dual Group 1 winner of the 2021 Toorak Handicap (1600m), the 2022 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and won the 2021 $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m).

Other notable nominations are Mo’unga (NZ), winner the 2021 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the 2021 Group 1 Winx Stakes (1600m) and reigning 2022 Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) champion Mr Brightside (NZ) have been allocated 56.5kg.

The highest weighted mare will be four-time Group 1 winner Montefilia who has been allocated 57.0kg. Montefilia won the 2020 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), the 2020 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the 2021 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) and the 2022 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

There are three 3-year-old horses nominated, with the 2022 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) and 2022 Group 1 Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) winner Fireburn to carry 51.0kg. The other 3yo horses have been allocated the 48.0kg minimum.
