For a horse that was doing things ‘upside down’ less than 12 months ago, Biographer has done a tidy job of turning his fortunes around much to the delight of trainer Ron Quinton.
The four-year-old arrived at Quinton’s stable from Victoria around a year ago winless after three starts and it soon became apparent there was work to be done.
“He wanted to get things over and done with too quickly,’’ Quinton said.
“If you can switch them off and get them to relax they can show dash but if they do it upside down they’re not nearly as effective.
“He’s become a little model racehorse in the stable.”
Biographer, $10 with TAB on Tuesday, has won three of his five starts this preparation, kicking off with a maiden win at Gosford, and graduated to city company with an all the way win at Kensington over 1000m three weeks ago.
When it comes to his assignment in the Star Turn @ Vinery Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury on Wednesday, Quinton is wary he’ll need to be ridden a lot differently from an outside barrier and is banking on jockey Jean Van Overmeire finding the right spot.
Biographer wins at Kensington on August 23
“He showed at his last Gosford win that he has a good turn of foot and he wasn’t ridden in that fashion last time,’’ he said.
“That’s probably what he’ll have to try and do from that draw. Jean seems to have a good understanding of the horse.
“If he’s ridden that way he can still run a good race.
“He won well last start and his two previous wins at Gosford were good. He appears as though he’s up to metropolitan standard on his last win.”
Stablemate Smart Little Miss is finding wins hard to come by but Quinton can’t fault her consistency.
The mare’s last win was back in January at Gosford but since then she’s recorded five placings from six starts and four of those in Benchmark 72 grade.
She’s back against fillies and mares in the TAB Handicap (1200m) after a closing third behind Strombus over 1400m at Kensington last month.
“She just has a bit of trouble winning that one in town,’’ Quinton said.
“She always indicates she needs that fraction further but we don’t seem to be able to get everything right.
“The 1200m might be a touch sharp for her maybe but if they go a good gallop she can come into it then. I’m sure she will run a creditable race again.”
