Punters' Pal: Chris Waller (Randwick)

By Brad Gray

Nothing but quotes from Chris Waller who gives punters an insight into his stable's key runners heading into Saturday's meeting at Royal Randwick.

Andaz ($6.50 TAB) – R1 ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap (1300m) “He is a lovely horse and a winner. Two starts for two wins both over 1100m but I don’t think 1300m will be a problem at all. Arinosa (full sister) was a good 1400m horse. He has had a late start to his career but he has made an impact.”

“He is a rough chance of getting to the Golden Rose if he runs wells on Saturday. That’s what we’ve geared it towards but if not, we’ll run him in some of the three-year-old races.”

Merovee ($6.50 TAB) – R1 ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap (1300m) “Really nice horse. Forget what he’s by. Forget his price tag. Let him be a race horse and you’ll be pretty happy if you follow him.”

“I’m not sure if he can win on Saturday but I’m sure you’ll be talking about him after the race. He’ll hit the line strongly. Once we get him over the mile he’ll win a good race.”

Up ‘N’ Rolling ($2 TAB) – R2 National Jockeys Trust Handicap (2000m) “He is going to charge through the grades. How far he gets I’m not sure. He is not a big strong horse yet hence the reason why he ran first up over 1550m.

“He is a very athletic horse with a slighter build. Similar to McCreery. That won’t worry him getting through the grades and he is a great chance on Saturday but it might just pull him up in a Group race this preparation. Time will tell.”

Sarrasin ($26 TAB) – R7 G2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) “He has got nice form and his first up run was good. He just blew out. The last 100m he got the stitch. He has come back well though.”

“He is three weeks between runs which suits and I’m keen to run him in the Kingston Town in two weeks and then onto The Metrop.”

Life Less Ordinary ($26 TAB) – R7 G2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) “Saturday is not the right race for him because of his rating but it’s an important stepping stone towards the Kingston Town. He looks a really good horse. Maybe we’re getting fooled by the speed he has shown but he was unlucky not to have won first up.”

“He has won a two mile race and dreams are free, and he’s our dream at the moment.”

“There is the Naturalism to consider too so we’ll try to send one down to Melbourne and keep two or three here (for The Metrop).”

Winx ($1.09 TAB) – R7 G2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) “She just covers the ground so quickly so I guess the simple answer is that she is fast. What makes her fast? Well, her legs move faster than anything else.”

“It’s been well documented that she doesn’t have a long, exuberant stride but she just gets the job done and moves very quickly. We see that in her races from the 400m to the 200m mark, where she just has amazing acceleration.”

Mackintosh ($12 TAB) – R8 G2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) “He only had two weeks off through winter and has been in work for most of the time since the Stradbroke. He should be fairly fit, although he has drawn a bit wide. This time last year he was flying and he ran a close third in the Epsom. He’s not far off there so he should run well.”

McCreery ($12 TAB) – R8 G2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) “He has been a very unlucky horse and is a worthy Group One contender. He’s another candidate for the Epsom. He is a smaller horse so the less weight he has the better.”

“He was disappointing in the Epsom last year but was very unlucky in the Cantala and also very unlucky in the Doncaster. He’ll get his chance this spring.”

Tom Melbourne ($6 TAB) – R8 G2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) “I’m keen to keep some speed in his legs. His first up run as very promising but he looks to me like he still does a few little things wrong so the best way is to take him out of the zone where he is he is too keen is to keep him to the shorter distances.”

“I’ll try him again over 1400m and that’ll say whether we target mile to 1800m races or go beyond that. We often fall into the trap of thinking that because they are European or English that they will stay but it’s not always the case. Horses like a change in their routine and softer training so that could see him thrive over the mile.”

“Maybe the Makybe Diva and then there is the Hill Stakes.”
