Punter's Intelligence Wrap - The Coast Day

Hezashocka revelled in the testing conditions at Newcastle on Saturday to win the Gosford Gold Cup (2200m) and earned himself eligibility for the 2024 Big Dance.

The race was run at a very fast pace, with favourite Goldman running the first 1600m in 1:43.59, approximately 19.5 lengths quicker for that section than the Benchmark 78 event over 2200m using raw times.

The gelding absorbed the pressure, overcame difficulties, and knuckled down hard late to run the race's fastest final 200m in 12.33, 2.5 lengths faster than the next best.

Sir Lucan was arguably one of the day's runs after being posted three wide throughout and working the entire way.

He ran the race's quickest 800m-400m split in 24.49, hit the front early, and was brave in defeat.
He beat the rest easily, and third-up last campaign, he produced his peak figure.

The winkers came off Magnaspin, and he was courageous, winning the feature $500,000, The Coast (1600m).

He chased a fast pace throughout, and when he looked beaten, he picked himself up over the final stages and worried his challenges out of it.

His effort was strong to still clock 13.08 for his final 200m after settling handy to that tempo.

Hollywood Hero was run to suit but clocked the fastest closing splits for the race, with his final 600m being 36.59.

Harlem Queen made her debut in the two-year-old handicap over 1200m, and her effort had sectional merit.

Although she had first use of the track, she wasn't suited to the sit/sprint race shape and raced immaturely.

Once she got her mind on the job, she hit the line hard and recorded the second fastest final 200m split of the meeting in 11.88. She will improve from the race experience.

Aemelius, also making her debut, had genuine excuses, and her effort had hidden merit.
She was building through her gears but had her momentum completely halted. She tried hard to the line, running 12.11 for her final furlong.

Scarlet Oak was ultra-impressive, winning the Benchmark 72 event over 1600m, and did it easily.

She had every chance in the run but had the race won at the top of the straight. She was never fully exerted, wasn't ridden out, and still clocked some of the meeting's fastest final 600m/400m/200m splits in 35.15/23.25/11.92.

The Chris Waller import is a lightly raced improver and can go on with it.

Piggyback was a flashing light run after being completely unsuited to the race shape.

She ran on hard and recorded one of the fastest final 600m sectionals of the meeting in 35.09. Expect her to be hard to hold out in a similar grade.

One of the hidden runs of the day was Wategos in the Listed 1200m event won by Semillion.

Nothing went right for the gelding, and he had too much to do. He never got on the track, had to make a long-wide sustained run, and ran the race's quickest 600m-200m split in 23.32 before peaking. He's ready to peak third-up over more ground.

Fastest last 600m: Deep Rouge 33.79
