Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Spring Champion Stakes Day

NZ raider Sharp ‘N’ Smart was outstanding, winning the Group 1 Spring Champion (2000m) after racing wide throughout and courageously kept finding the line to score over the concluding stages.

Punter’s Intelligence recorded the gelding travelled 2015.9m, and to put that in perspective, he ran an extra 7.9m relative to the second placegetter Elliptical.

Even after doing all that work, the Graeme & Deborah Rogerson galloper still clocked the second fastest final 200m split of the race in 12.91.

He is on an upwards ratings spiral this prep and can improve again.

The race was run at a solid pace, with the leader Bunker Hut running the first 1400m in 1:30.03.

She’s Extreme’s run was full of merit after having too much to do.

The filly got too far back, was checked/blocked at critical stages, and ran on hard. She produced the race’s quickest final 600m/400m/200m splits in 36.85/24.80/12.80.

She should lose no admirers and proved she can stay the trip.

Renaissance Woman also had excuses and ran the race fastest 600m-200m split in 23.91 before peaking on her run over the final furlong.

Matcha Latte was brave in defeat and Manzoice is looking for more distance.

The other feature race, The Invitation (1400m), produced an exciting finish with multiple key sectional performances and the race rated well relative to the day, even after adjustments.

The race was run at an even pace, but there was a critical mid-race slowdown between the 800m-600m, which was run in 12.03. Further, this changed the race’s complexion and caused interference.

Winner Promise Of Success was ridden patiently by Kerrin McEvoy, and ran one of the quickest 400m-200m splits of the meeting in 11.59.

Never Talk was restrained early from a wide draw and wasn’t suited throughout transit.

She was fantastic in defeat after being detached from the field early and then had to make a long-wide sustained run.

Moreover, she clocked the race’s fastest final 600m/400m/200m sectionals in 35.96/24.31/12.61.

The five-year-old does have a negative race pattern but is in career-best form, and continue to follow her on wet tracks.

Belle Plaisir got shuffled back when the pace came out of the race and had genuine excuses. To her credit, she picked herself up and ran the third-quickest final 600m of the race in 36.14.

Electric Girl arguably should’ve won and hit the line running the second fastest final 200m split in 12.67.

Sheeza Belter had no luck and Icebath’s chances were gone after she blew the start.

We had another look at the new season two-year-olds, and Barber was the victor in the Kirkham Plate (1000m).

The Godolphin galloper is well-educated, and once a gap appeared, he sprinted through it and ran one of the quickest final 200m sectionals of the day in 12.13.

Coincide never shirked his task to the line holding on for second, and the well-fancied Dipsy Doodle raced greenly but still ran the races second-fastest 400m-200m split in 11.56.

The hidden run of the race was Razors, who began awkwardly and then was not suited.

In addition, he was checked/blocked between the 400m-200m and found the line well once clear.

The colt clocked the second-quickest final 600m sectional of the meeting in 35.12.

It’s worth noting Diamil who won the Filante Handicap (1600m) in style.

The race was run at a farcical tempo, with the first 1000m being run in 1:02.28, which was approximately 8-8.5 lengths slower than the TAB Callander-Presnell (1600m).

Diamil showed an electric turn of foot, running 35.68 for his final 600m and rounded up Purple Sector over the final stages, who beat the rest easily.

Bonny Ezra returned well and clocked the race fastest final 200m split in 12.25. Look for her over more distance.

A quick comment on Samoot in the Benchmark 88 over 1200m, who wasn’t suited and ran the entire meetings quickest final 600m/400m/200m splits in 35.01/23.19/11.81. Follow her in a similar grade on rain-affected ground.

Fastest last 600m: Samoot 35.01
