Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Spring Champion Day

Robbie Dolan’s decisive early move in the G1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) was what ultimately landed the young jockey his first Group One.

He drove Profondo out of the barriers to sit outside of the leader Never Been Kissed and once that duo put the first 600m behind them, they slackened the pace in the middle stages, giving nothing else a chance.

Profondo was as dominant late on the clock as he was to the eye with the Deep Impact colt clocking a race quickest last 600m of 34.35. He accelerated brilliantly from the 400-200 with an 11.18s before recording an 11.71 last 200m, with the next best Alegron’s 11.90.

The overall time was nine lengths slower than the BM78 over 2000m earlier on the Randwick card, but that was due to the frantic tempo set by Herman Hesse and Cognac.

Comparing their times to the 1400m mark, there was a whopping 22 lengths difference, hence why Yiyi was just a tick outside of the 2000m Randwick track record set by Hampton Court in, coincidentally, the 2014 Spring Champion Stakes.

Paulele gave Godolphin a decision to make as to what’s next for their three-year-old after he justified his odds on quote in the Roman Consul Stakes, clocking 33.41s in the run home.

The eye catcher was Overpass. After being forced back to last from the wide draw, the Bjorn Baker-trained youngster scooted home in 33.32s, a shade quicker than the winner. Another win surely isn’t far away for him.

Aim, Ellsberg and Count De Rupee booked their spot in the $7.5 Golden Eagle in three weeks’ time after running one, two, three in Saturday’s Silver Eagle.

The 1300m event was leisurely run in the early stages turning into a spring home. Aim dashed fastest the last 400m, recording a race quickest last 200m of 11.19s, with Blondeau in fourth clocking the fastest last 600m (33.09s).

Different Strokes firmed into an early favourite for The Four Pillars after scoring a dominant victory in the meeting’s Midway Handicap. After lobbing into the perfect trailing position, the four-year-old was never losing, clocking a 33.75s last 600m.

Hilal and Coastwatch matched motors in the Stan Fox Stakes, an important lead up to the Bondi Stakes (1600m) in a fortnight, with Hilal having too much firepower for the even-money favourite.

Hilal’s last 600m of 33.74s was two lengths quicker than that of Coastwatch (35.10s).

Tricky Gal produced yet another fantastic first up run, railing into second by Minhaaj in The Nivison. The Matthew Smith-trained mare posted a slick 32.92s last 600m with an 11.08s last 200m, a length and a half faster than the next best.

With The Invitation only two weeks away, she might have put her hand up at exactly the right time.

Leo’s affinity with the Randwick 1000m continued with the five-year-old transitioning from Highway Handicap company to a BM78.

He powered clear of his rivals with a 32.46s last 600m but it was his last 200m that was particularly noteworthy, posting an 11.14s split, two lengths superior than the next best.

On the topic of Highways, keep an eye on Foodie King wherever he appears next start. He speared to the line when finally clear on Saturday posting a race quickest 11.97s last 200m, despite finishing ninth.

Fastest last 600m: Just Field 32.30
