Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Rosehill 7th January

Passeggiata’s dashing all the way win at Rosehill on Saturday saw the Bjorn Baker filly live up to the hype leading in and the sectionals reveal how significant the first half of the race was to her win.

Punter’s Intelligence sectional data from the Kia Ora Farnan Handicap (1100m) showed Passeggiata ran the second slowest last 600m of 34.38 – just under a second or about six lengths slower than the runner-up Narito (33.48).

But it’s how she took the gas out of her rivals early that stands out.

As the vision illustrates, Passeggiata scooted along from the jump and broke the field up. Her first 500m was 30.41 which unsurprisingly was easily the fastest of the race.

From there she sustained her gallop between the 600m and 200m, while her sectionals were considerably slower than those chasing her, they had to be, the splits she produced were quite consistent.

Even her last 200m of 11.73 was only a bit over two lengths slower than the race’s best for that split.

What it says is that Passeggiata is blessed with plenty of speed and if that speed can be harnessed a little, so it doesn’t become a liability, she’s going to work her way through the grades quickly.

The fastest last 600m of the race, and the meeting, was run by Smokeshow who only beat one home but the clock still shows she ran 33.30 and her last 200m of 11.33 was significantly faster than those in front of her too.

She was coming off a Class 3 win at Wagga so there are plenty of options out there for her.

Pizarro might have been beaten first-up in the Fujitsu General Handicap (1200m) but two things conspired against him to bring him undone, and from a sectional perspective nothing hit the line better than him all day.

First, he wasn’t the best to begin so conceded a bigger start than he probably would have. And, second, Titanium Power was afforded a much easier lead than anticipated.

So for Pizarro to win the race he’d have to really break the clock. As it was he ran 33.87 for his last 600m, just 0.02 outside Noble Soldier’s race best time, and his final 200m of 11.17 was the meeting’s fastest.

He’s a horse destined for better races and he can atone next time, especially if it’s back home at Randwick.

An import called Tip Of The Spear from the Annabel Neasham yard might be one to keep an eye on after an encouraging Australian debut in the Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1500m).

He finished fifth behind Bazooka and his last 200m of 11.55 was the second fastest in the race, he warmed up noticeably late and can only improve.

Worth noting the Peter & Paul Snowden import Born With Wings clocked the second fastest last 600m in the race, running 34.72 as he built up nicely between the 800m and 200m before just knocking up the last 200m. So even though he only beat one home there’s some upside.

Beaten favourite Estadio Mestalla posted the race’s best last 600m of 34.41, he was clearly faster than the winner between the 600m and 200m but the ground he conceded likely proved the difference.

Fastest last 600m: Smokeshow 33.30.
