She’s found wins a little hard to come by until recently but Irish Angel is ready to improve on her strike rate after a super performance in defeat at Rosehill on Saturday.
The four-year-old’s record reads three wins from 19 starts, two of those wins coming either side of her most recent spell, though to be fair to her she did bump into Marway and Lost And Running earlier in the year.
But Punter’s Intelligence sectional data from her second placing in the Agency Real Estate Handicap (1100m) showed how well she’s going this time in as she clocked the fastest last 600m of the meeting with a 33.98.
Around the 600m, Irish Angel was spotting the eventual winner Magic Ruler over 10m and while he enjoyed the run of the race she spent 100m or so going sideways getting to the outside.
She clocked the fastest 600m-400m (11.60), 400m-200m (11.01) and last 200m (11.37) by clear margins so Chris Waller clearly has Irish Angel flying and she can be relied upon to hold her form in the Benchmark 72-78 grades.
Bjorn Baker’s handy stayer Harpo Marx showed he’s in for a big winter preparation with his eye-catching fifth when resuming in the Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1500m).
He ran up behind a wall of horses early in the straight and looked to go a little one paced but late in the race he really warmed up and attacked the line.
The gelding clocked a 35.45 for his last 600m, the best of the race, including 11.89 (600m-400m) then 11.78 (400m-200m) and an equal best last 200m of 11.78.
He hasn’t missed a place in three second-up attempts so he can be expected to improve when he steps out next time and once he hits 2000m he’s a winning chance.
The winner Oscar Zulu was in the right spot all the way and he clocked 35.60 for his last 600m, a time matched by fourth placed Steely and tenth placed Shuffle Up with the latter running 11.56 for the 400m-200m, the race’s best.
Berdibek is just about read to win judging on his effort third-up in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2000m) running the fastest last 600m of 35.43.
He was a few pairs behind the winner Stockman coming to the turn and he looked dangerous as he loomed from the 400m-200m with the fastest split of 11.82, but the winner was a little stronger in the last 200m (11.79 vs 11.83).
Another eye-catcher from the Baker stable was Makowatakpe who zoomed from near last in the Ranvet Handicap (1300m) and his last 600m of 34.78 reflected it, being some two lengths faster than the next best. His last 200m of 11.63 was getting close to three lengths faster.
He was second-up there and perhaps if he draws more favourably next time he can break through.
There’s no reason why Royalzel can’t win again after he dominated in the E Group Security Handicap (1500m), he was clearly dominant running 34.72 for his last 600m (three lengths better than the next best).
Fastest last 600m: Irish Angel 33.98
