Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Randwick Guineas Day

It was billed as the race of the day and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) promises to be the form race of the Randwick Guineas meeting.

There’d be few horses you could say failed out of the race.

Clearly it was a contest that was dominated on the speed and when Punter’s Intelligence records a horse like Royal Patronage running a last 600m of 33.28, after sitting outside the leader, he’s going to be impossible to run down.

Let’s run through the merit in some of those behind him.

Runner-up Here To Shock tried his hardest to go with Royal Patronage and it was just in that last 200m (11.42, 1-1/2 lengths off the race’s fastest) he succumbed but he’s a tough on pacer who will continue to step up.

Magic Time clocked a last 600m of 33.29 as she ran into third after being just held up momentarily around the 300m mark and has run to form.

The race’s fastest last 600m went to Sunshine In Paris who landed just off midfield and had to do some weaving through to run fourth clocking 33.16 and also the fastest last 600m of 11.16.

Ceolwulf was clearly outsprinted coming back to the 1300m but he’s in business for the step up in distance again after running 33.21 for his last 600m.

Away from the top five there were pass marks from Encap (33.34 including a race best 400m-200m of 10.73) and while Celestial Legend beat only two home he ran 33.46 for his last 600m and given the drop off into the last 200m (11.60) he’ll come on in fitness.

Unfortunately there was no data taken from Randwick Guineas winner Linebacker but it’s safe to say Swiftfalcon posted the race’s fastest last 600m of 33.92 and final 200m of 11.76.

Once again the fillies were faster than the colts as the Golden Slipper approaches with Tempted running 1:08.49 in the Reisling, over three lengths faster than the Todman won by Tentyris in 1:09.06.

The first 600m of the Reisling was six lengths faster than the Todman though both races were won by horses sweeping home from the back.

Tempted ran 33.50 for her last 600m and she showed a dazzling turn of foot to run 10.76 from the 400m-200m while Tentyris, who unfortunately will miss the Slipper, dashed home in 33.09 running the fastest 400m-200m (10.79) and last 200m (11.37) in the Todman.

A couple of note behind the placings are Savvy Hallie who ran the third fastest last 600m (33.88) in the Reisling and Buffalo who was also third fastest in the Todman with 33.47 – a race like the Baillieu might be up his alley.

Michael Freedman has an under-rated sprinter in Enriched to take into the carnival on the back of a strong win in the Fireball (1100m) second-up from a spell.

The colt took significant improvement from his resumption and while he didn’t go around a horse in the run, taking a gap inside the leader, he sprinted sharply running 33.33 for his last 600m and the meeting’s fastest last 200m of 11.00.

There was merit in the run of third placed Zeitung as she worked home down the outside from last running 33.32 for her last 600m (race’s best).

Jedibeel had the honour of the fastest last 600m of the meeting (32.21) coming out of the Group 2 Challenge Stakes over the 1000m and he’ll be an interesting addition to The Galaxy in a couple of weeks.

He crept along the inside then had to work a bit to secure a clear run off the back of I Am Me so it’s not obvious that his 400m-200m of 10.66 was the race’s best, his 11.10 last 200m was half a length faster than the next.

Kimochi would lose no admirers as she ran into second from back in the field clocking 32.35 for her last 600m at a trip short of her best.

Fastest last 600m: Jedibeel 32.21
