Who knows what steps the lightly raced Toomuchtobear can take this summer on the evidence of his strong first-up win at Randwick on Saturday.
Sure it was a Benchmark 72 but Punter’s Intelligence sectional data showed his performance to win the ATC Thanks John Williams Handicap (1400m) stacked up well against the open class performers later in the day.
From an overall time perspective the Chris Waller-trained galloper ran 1:22.99 which was about a length faster than stablemate Oscar Zulu who ran 1:23.14.
The first 600m was run in 35.76 before they backed off a little while Prime Candidate led the open race in 35.89 and kept them running.
Toomuchtobear clocked a last 600m of 33.96, almost two lengths faster than his rivals with a lot of that margin made up in the last 200m of 11.50.
He’s only had the eight starts, for four wins, and was effective up to 2000m last preparation so with room to move in the Benchmark system, now going to 78, he can still be placed to advantage.
While Oscar Zulu took the honours in the ACY Securities Handicap (1400m) there were some runs behind him worth noting.
Runner-up Purple Sector was brave after sitting wide throughout, his last 600m of 34.73 was only fourth best but he did post the fastest last 200m of the race in 11.94 so he’s come back in good order.
Bottega produced the race’s fastest last 600m of 34.54, he sprinted sharply with 11.36 (600m-400m) and 11.10 (400m-200m) before knocking up late with a final 200m of 12.08. Wouldn’t surprise if he improves with the run.
Holy Reign caught the eye in the Midway Handicap (1200m) running on from near last into third place, he recorded 34.68 for the last 600m which was two lengths faster than the next best.
His second-up form is sound so he can improve on a promising return.
Once again Huetor showed he has a turn of foot at the end of his races making it three from three in the Precise Air Handicap (2000m).
His last 600m of 35.16 was over three lengths faster than his next best rival and the last 200m of 12.03 was two lengths superior. If he can retain that sprint in Group company he’ll surely measure up.
It was a dynamic return to racing, and form, from The Bopper in the Schweppes Sprint (1000m) with a strong last 200m of 11.82 to put the race away.
He posted a last 600m of 33.79 which was second best to runner-up Van Giz (33.67 for the meeting’s fastest) who sprinted sharply with a 400m-200m of 10.87 (the only horse to break 11 seconds) before knocking up late with a 12.02 for her last 200m.
Fastest last 600m: Van Giz 33.67
