Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Randwick 11th December

There may have been hard luck stories behind him but it’s hard to take anything away from the win of El Padrino in the $400,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) at Randwick.

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace trained youngster sat three wide without cover and Punter’s Intelligence sectional data showed he was still able to reel off the fastest last 600m of 34.12 as he wore down the early leaders.

It was a slowly run race, which no doubt helped El Padrino cover the extra ground, with the first 600m run in 36.60 or about 10 lengths slower than the TAB Highway (35.04) over the same trip.

While he didn’t record a race best sectional outside the overall last 600m, consistency was the key as he posted the second fastest 600m-400m (11.40), 400m-200m (11.08) and last 200m (11.64).

Runner-up Calgary Stampede ran 34.35 for his last 600m but it was his final 200m of 11.87 that was the difference in the run home.

The unlucky Boldinho had his momentum stalled when stablemate El Padrino kept him in a pocket inside the 200m so his final 200m of 11.92 could easily have been much faster. Whether he wins is debatable but he ran 34.47 for the last 600m.

It might be worth keeping an eye on Capital Elle who was on debut off one trial and produced the fastest last 200m of the race (11.59) as she warmed up late into fifth.

Brutality won his way into the Doncaster Mile at the Star Championships with his powerful win in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m).

While there were some issues with the sectionals, Brutality was just outside the race’s best 400m-200m running 10.98 and his last 200m of 11.51 was third fastest.

There’s no doubt Criaderas again posted the fastest last 600m of the race as he hit the line from last clocking 34.41 but he’s a very well known commodity who has to be taken on trust.

Stockman lost no admirers on the drying track, he ran 34.66 for his last 600m and matched Criaderas for the fastest final 200m of 11.38 so he should be a force in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) on Boxing Day.

There’s plenty more wins in store for Godolphin three-year-old Bacchanalia after a dominant performance in the Cellarbrations Handicap (1100m).

The gelding posted the fastest last 600m of the meeting, running 33.52, which was highlighted by his 400m-200m of 10.73, more than a length quicker than anything else, as he sprinted to the lead.

Perhaps there’s a case to say that Dragonstone wasn’t suited by being ridden on the speed, he had to work a bit early (10.74 from the 1000m-800m) to get across and did battle with Lady Banff before sitting to her outside.

Speaking of dominant wins, Special Reward exploded to take out the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) with a last 600m of 33.77, more than three lengths faster than anything else in the race.

He was one of only two horses to break 12 seconds for the last 200m (11.62) with the other being runner-up Snapdancer who ran 11.90 and the second best last 600m of 34.33.

Annabel Neasham produced an ex-Kiwi called Lightning Jack to win the Catanach’s Handicap (1600m) with a month between runs and he showed a nice turn of foot in the straight.

The gelding clocked a 35.37 for his last 600m, almost two lengths faster than the next best, and 12.13 for his last 200m. Plus the overall time was slightly faster than the Villiers a race earlier from which he was a scratching.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can back that up.

Fourth placed Mubariz wasn’t disgraced, he spent all his pennies making a long run which started inside the 1000m mark and it told in his final 200m of 12.53. He’s worth another chance.

Fastest last 600m: Bacchanalia 33.52.
