Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Golden Eagle Day

There’s going to be so much form come out of Saturday’s $7.5 million XXXX Golden Eagle (1500m) it’s hard to know where to start.

A sustained surge from the winner I’m Thunderstruck was the difference between first and second for the rising star, while Punter’s Intelligence sectional data shows he clocked the fastest last 600m of the race (33.72) it was the last 200m that was telling.

He ran 11.21 for that section which was a length and a half faster than the next best and, importantly, two lengths faster than the gallant runner-up Count De Rupee (11.55).

It’s a sign of a high class racehorse that I’m Thunderstruck was able to produce such a burst at the end of the race given that he ran 11.30 from the 600m-400m and 11.20 from the 400m-200m.

There was nothing Brock Ryan could have done better to win the race, it was the perfect ride and he actually put almost a length on I’m Thunderstruck between the 400m and 200m when Count De Rupee ran 11.08 so he can hold his head high.

Several horses behind the placegetters were outstanding in defeat, and none more so than the import Laws Of Indices.

The Irish galloper travelled four and five wide throughout most of the 1500m and not surprisingly covered an extra 17.6m, which was comfortably more than any other runner.

He just missed third, finishing fifth, and ran a 33.91 last 600m (second fastest) and 11.46 last 200m (also second fastest). A race like The Gong over a mile would be a great target but if we wait until the autumn he’s a name to remember.

Fellow import Maximal wasn’t disgraced in running sixth, his run seemed a bit more grinding but he did clock 11.54 for his last 200m which was the third fastest. Imagine he will be a force in the new year as well.

The run of Private Eye was also enormous in eighth place, he was near the tail coming to the turn on a day where it was handy to be closer to the speed and clocked 33.93 for his last 600m (third fastest).

The 400m-200m split was amazing, though, as he ran 10.95 to make him the only horse to break 11 seconds for that section (though Laws Of Indices did run 11 flat).

You’d be handing The Hunter trophy to Lost And Running if he has another shot this spring after a superb chasing effort in the $1m Classique Legend Stakes (1300m).

He’s just improved with each run this time in and backed up his Everest fourth placing by running 32.94 for his last 600m, after racing three wide with cover off an outside gate, including the race’s fastest last 600m of 11.04.

If he’s signing off for the spring he’s set to be a major player in the sprints of 2022.

Edit was thrown in the deep end after his eye-catching run in The Kosciuszko and it’s safe to say he’ll be winning a race down in grade on taking on such an elite field.

He posted a 32.90 race best last 600m in finishing in ninth place and the second fastest last 200m of 11.07. There’s a 1300m Benchmark 88 on Hunter day at Newcastle and that appears where he’s headed.

Kiss Sum came of age with the blinkers on to win the $700,000 Four Pillars (1500m) and he easily ran the fastest last 600m in doing it. The three-year-old clocked 33.49 for that split and his 11.19 last 200m was also the race’s best by well over a length.

The horse to follow from the race is Cream Rises, who finished seventh, and he was only getting warm late running 33.76 for his last 600m and 11.39 for his last 200m in a timely return to form.

Stakes company awaits Godolphin mare Katalin after she set the standard for the day running 32.58 for the last 600m to win the Agency Real Estate Handicap (1200m).

She had some ground to make up in the home straight on the leader Selburose but she ran 10.66 from the 400m-200m then a sizzling, and also meeting best, last 200m of 10.77 (more than two lengths faster than next best) to pick up the leader on the line.

Fastest last 600m: Katalin 32.58
