Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Epsom Day

The Premiere stakes (1200m) is the primary leadup race to the $15M TAB Everest, and we saw an exciting finish on Saturday with multiple contenders running well.

Punter’s Intelligence recorded that the race was run at a strong tempo with leader Prime Candidate running the first 600m in 35.94, which was approximately 11 lengths quicker than the Benchmark 94 Handicap (1200m).

Lost And Running started a solid $2.25 favourite, and the gelding had to make a long sustained run to score.

Further, he was exposed early before the final straight and got left in front a long way out after sprinting the second fastest 400m-200m split in 11.52.

The John O’Shea galloper’s career peak figures have come at this track/distance, and he is ready to win third-up.

Masked Crusader had to make his run through the inferior ground and clocked one of the quickest final 600m sectionals of the meeting in 35.19.

The six-year-old will need luck in a fortnight due to his racing pattern, but as has shown in the past, he can run elite closing splits.

Mazu tried hard and kept coming all the way to the line, as did Kementari who ran the equal race fastest 600m-400m split in 11.41.

It’s worth noting Brutality has come back in good order after clocking the quickest 200m split of the race in 12.06 and is suited over further distances.

We saw the new season two-year-olds step out for the first time, and there were some key runners to highlight.

The Breeders’ Plate (1000m) was run at a genuine pace with Mach Ten running the first 400m in 24.04, and his run was full of merit, finishing second after having the pace/bias against.

On a day where it was hard to lead and win, he sprinted the race’s second fastest 400m-200m in 11.77 before the early work told over the final furlong.

However, winner Empire Of Japan was a dominant performer, and he did it in style.

The well-educated colt sprinted past his rivals and extended the margin over the final 200m clocking 12.48 for his last 200m.

The Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) went out at an almost identical pace, and Platnium Jubilee produced an incredible effort to score.

The Waterhouse & Bott trained runner was run to suit, but she came from an impossible position and savaged the line to run slick closing splits relative to the day.

She ran her final 600m/400m/200m in 34.99/23.61/12.08. Follow her throughout the season.

Perfect Proposal looked the winner and showed fight after working hard early and will undoubtedly strip fitter.

Achlys worked to the line well, running the race’s second quickest final 200m in 12.71 and Satin And Silk never shirked her task in the worst ground.

A quick mention of Top Ranked who dead-heated for first in the TAB Epsom (1600m).

The seven-year-old carried the top weight in the feature handicap and sprinted the race’s fastest 600m-200m split in 23.45 before peaking on his run. He will undoubtedly improve third-up again.

As referenced, the Benchmark 94 Handicap (1200m) was run at a farcical tempo, and there were some hidden runs away from the placegetters.

Steely had too much to do and clocked the race quickest last 600m in 35.16, and Cliff’s Art is one to follow on a drier surface after running the race fastest last 200m in 12.08.

Zoushack is set to peak third-up and expect an aggressive ride.

Fastest last 600m: Platinum Jubilee 34.99
