Think It Over proved yet again he is one of Australia's best racehorses with an impressive win in the Agency Apollo Stakes (1400m), a race that saw the return of multiple stars at Randwick.
It was a dominant display after chasing a very fast tempo and bringing the rest of the field up to the tearaway leaders I Am Superman and Riodini, who were locked in a speed duel throughout.
Punter’s Intelligence sectional data recorded the first 800m race sectional in 46.83 and Think It Over’s last 600m in 34.62.
Champion mare and multiple Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant’s return suggested she has come back well after posting the second-fastest last 600m of the race in 34.11 whilst in the inferior ground. As her profile shows, she will improve second-up over a further distance and looks ready to defend her crown in the TAB Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
Other runners to note were Icebath, who just got too far back and recorded the race’s fastest 400m-200m split in 10.99. As her ratings profile suggests, she will improve throughout the preparation and looks on track for her Autumn targets.
The run of I Am Superman was brave after running the first 800m in 46.83 and battling on well to finish fourth. The combination of a dry track and back to handicap conditions will suit.
We can bring strong comparisons between the other three feature group races, which all came out of the Randwick 1200m chute.
As expected, the Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) ran the fastest overall time in 1:09.54. Everest contender Lost And Running responded well under pressure with 61kg after being given every chance by Hugh Bowman, running his last 400m in 22.14.
The hidden run of the race was Irish import Laws Of Indices running the race’s fastest last 600m in 33.56 and last 400m in 22.12, which was the fastest individual 400m section of the entire meeting. He will undoubtedly improve over further distance.
The TAB Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) went out the hardest in terms of pace, with the first 600m in 34.94. This was approximately three lengths faster than the Southern Cross Stakes and around six to seven lengths faster than Snapdancer, who led all the way in the Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes, albeit on a deteriorating track.
Winner Fangirl was ridden a treat by Hugh Bowman and hit the line well, clocking the fastest last 200m in 11.25 and a length faster than favourite Espiona (11.42). She is on an upwards rating spiral and has key attributes to keep stepping up to the challenge.
Espiona should lose no admirers after bravely racing three-wide with cover from a tricky draw and looks in for a strong preparation. Although there is plenty of hype surrounding her, the starting price must be respected.
It’s worth noting Zouzarella, who stuck on well after racing wide without cover and Heresy had no luck in the straight. Startantes was also solid first-up with the race’s second fastest last 600m in 33.77 and suited over further.
Snapdancer was given all favours by James McDonald in the Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes (1200m), winning comfortably. The first half of the race was significantly slower than the other 1200m events but a very fast last 600m of 33.60 saw the overall time fall just 0.09 outside the Southern Cross.
Her burst of acceleration between the 400m-200m mark (10.85) left her rivals chasing and gave them no hope of catching her. She is one to follow.
Promise Of Success also returned well, running 33.74 for her last 600m in the worst ground.
A quick mention of The Sharp Extensive It Handicap (1300m), which was run on rain-affected ground and saw a fast pace with the first 700m run in 41.12. Decisive margins throughout at the finish confirms the strength of the race.
Le Gai Soleil was impressive at the trials prior and proved that form with a convincing win. She clocked a 22.41 between the 600m-200m.
Bound To Win ran on well-running 34.83 for her last 600m and will be hoping for dry tracks in the near future.
Fastest Last 600m: Invincible Kiss 33.33
